Photographer's Note

After an early morning hike in the Drakensberg, we were driving back on rugged roads to discover small Zulu villages.

At one point, we heard people beating the drums, dressed in ceremonial clothes and walking towards a small inner court. We immediately jumped out of the car, asking them if it was a wedding or a funeral.

It appears that it was the anniversary of a leader of this Zulu community and they cordially accepted to receive us within their celebration.

It was a real blast to be part of this unexpected festivity, as some of the women were performing traditional dances, making music and at some point, getting into a trance, as the ritual was climaxing.

Here, another photo of the same celebration.
