We met this Madala (meaning old in Zulu) man on the road towards Cathedral Peak in the Drakensberg. He was telling us that he had lived in this same village there for 70 years.
Cathedral Peak (3,004 m or 9,856 feet) is a free standing mountain in the Natal Drakensberg. The mountain is also known as Mponjwana (Little Horn) by the local Amangwane people.

Excellent portrait ! J'aime beaucoup l'allure de cette personne et son sourire presque caché !
La profondeur de champ est excellente et permet de focaliser l'attention sur le sujet !
Bien vu !

Wonderful portrait! The texture and light really shows a lot of details. I love the blurry background. It isolates the person very well.

Don't ask me why, but this character makes me think of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs... :-p)) This would be "Happy" character.
Great "face-scouting", genuine eye contact, natural pose and magnetic personality. Difficult exposure management perfectly mastered. Sharpness on the face features and nicely blurred background.
A remarkable portrait.

Nice portrait of the old man naturally holding his stick
I share the view of André and without being irrespectful to him, it is true that there is some look of one of the seven dwarfs in his smiling face and posture
have a nice day

while not loving portraits, this has a strong taste of hard human interest story.Smile just raised, proud look, perspiring magnetism.I also like the decentralized and slightly "overflowing" position of the figure within the image.Technically excellent, the subject is fully isolated from the context, but in turn, it could perfectly be placeable in it.

relax attitude, he seems small, but has a nice smile for you, and us!

Ahh Wanda, This makes me homesick-- to see the wonderful featured faces of this old Madala with his knobkerrie.. What a lovely life they live.. Well captured with good clarity and sharpness.
I am back over Easter and hope to get up to Witsieshoek and the lovely walk up to the top of the Amphitheatre via the chain ladder - A beautiful days walk and should be lovely towards the end of April.. Keep in touch Rich

As for your previous portrait, I like a lot the 'happy' face of this man who seems to enjoy to be the subject of the photo.
I would have prefered to have the left hand fully inside the frame, but it is minor point for this portrait already efficient for the feeling shared.

Strong shot, Wanda. I like the way the blue overall stands out against the green of the bonnet and of the bg. Superb sharpness on the man's face and a very good expression there too. A pity you cropped into the hand, but the shot is good enough to survive that obvious flaw. Nice work, thanks for sharing it.
Hou je goed.

Hola Wanda ...
It is a good portrait and although
the framing could be better without cutting
the left hand, the photo is very interesting for
the expression and the attitude of the man.
Un abrazo y feliz tarde.

Dag dear Wanda!
A fine portrait indeed! At first glance, he looked like an Australian aborigine. Fine shallow DOF to isolate the Madala from the BG. The details on his face have been brought out very well. A fine work!

Hello Wanda ,
Like the smile of this sympatehetic man . His attitude , too . I'm not at all a specialist , but the framing is very well for my taste . Also , an excellent blurred BG .

Hi Wanda Great portrait of Madala man Cheers Iain
avene (12675) 2011-02-23 19:00
hehe, he does look a bit like a happy dwarf, or Smurf :)
fascinating portrait, I particularly like colour contrasts of this right blue shirt, cotton-like beard and beautiful skin tone. pity about the croped hand, but I know how difficult it is to capture candid portraits like this, and osmetimes you have to deal with things missing from the frame. I might have tried a tighter crop and remove the right side just until his shoulder to deal with that partially missing hand, but that might look even worse, lol. great shot as is.

Beautiful portrait of the man with good face. Three-dimensional impression and definition are superb indeed! sharpness of beard is also remarkable. Such an excellent quality can rarely be seen on TE.
Have a nice day, Hisashi

a beautiful picture, very attractive because it portrays a very interesting subject. I really like the management of the depth of field and color rendering.

Welcome back, it's so good to see you posting regularly again, you have been missed. I love this guy, I just want to cuddle him. He's adorable and obviously thinks you're wonderful too. The rapport between subject and photographer is patent. Wonderful colours, definition and that smile...worth a million dollars.
Best wishes and thanks for sharing

I love his atitude too and his little smile
You travel very much like me, but You live in a wonderful country too, wich I appreciate very much ..
abmdsudi (53703) 2011-02-26 1:27
Love the expression, thoughtful, and the lovely background blur. Good use of shallow depth of field to ensure attention is held firmly in the face and particularly around the eyes. Well composed, by off-centre positioning adds some dynamism to the image. The detail's there and it shows his character in his natural relaxed pose. Eye level shooting angle just makes the photo more engaging. Limited colour pallette works well, and the unobtrusive background is exactly right. The image is exposed really nice and pretty sharp. Lovely portrait, Congrats

another great portrait, wanda - there is something riveting in this man's expression, his posture and the colours. the texture of the beret, the clarity of detail - lots of details that make one want to look at this photo over and over again.
