Future of Sierra Leone - Part 2
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
With my previous picture on Sierra Leone, I commented on the history of the country. The impact of the diamond trade and the crimes against humanity that took place in the various wars over the past decade.
This picture is more about the future. I already said at the end of the previous picture that the future lays in her hands. Well, not just in her hands, but in the hands of all Sierra Leonans.
There will be many challenges still ahead; the fight against corruption, the reintegration of people - civilian refugees, victims, adult fighters and child soldiers - back into their home society, reconciliation when it comes to tribal rivalry, community development and strengthening of the economy in order to increase employment, educational levels and to combat poverty. Just to name a few.
The photo gives an image of the future of Sierra Leone; It's clear who has the future of this country in their hands, though the past is visible in the picture as well and should not be neglected. The past has been neglected too often in the history of Sierra Leone. With devastating results.
I was visiting Freetown to see my girlfriend Martine, who was at that time working over there.

Hi Dennis,
Excellent double portrait. Despite what seems a hard life, they still manage to put up the most beautiful of smiles. I hope they have a happy future too so that the smile stays on their face. Wish you could have avoided that OE sky on the left.
With Greetings from India

Heel mooi.
