This is an underwater self portrait I took - so it's only as far away as my arm could reach. I came across this juvenile Hawksbill turtle while snorkeling around a very tiny secluded Island in the Seychelles called Cocos. I was able to get a boat ride out there while volunteering with the rangers on the island of Curieuse.
This turtle just stayed near my friend & I for about 10 minutes. I couldn't believe it! He even took a little nibble of the nose of my mask - thinking it looked a little like a tasty jellyfish!
The Seychelles is a small island nation located in the Indian Ocean northeast of Madagascar and about 1,600 km (1,000 miles) east of Kenya. The number of islands in the archipelago is often given as 115 but the Constitution of the Republic of Seychelles lists 155.
I stayed on the island of Mahé for most of the summer of 2006, doing marine conservation work. But also stayed on Curieuse for a week. The scenery was beautiful & the diving was incredible - including time in the water with the amazing Whale Sharks! |

Hello Margo,
I like the unconventional composition here. Even though the photo was randomly taken, there is a kind of symmetry with part of your face and part of the turtle's face on either side of the frame. The water is beautiful, too!
Really funy comparsion of the noses :).
I'm jealous about ther 10 min!
