I’ve struggled to get this shot right in PP; it was taken in full sunlight on Anze Lazio beach on Praslin Island in the Seychelles. I took it using a Hitech 10 Stop NDF with an F-stop of 13 and an exposure of 3 seconds. Out of the camera the RAW file had a terrible yellow-green cast which I found really difficult to correct. Additionally there was a white halo around the areas of high contrast although I didn’t use any in-camera sharpening at all. I am posting this and a WS shot in the hopes that someone with more experience of 10 Stop NDF’s can offer some help on correcting colour casts ( a problem I don’t usually have big issues with) and what caused the halos and how to get rid of them.

Ciao e buona serata

That's a beautiful place and a very nice picture! I like the soft tones on the rocks and the sand.

hello rosemary. a top notch photo for consulting the teachers of TE :) if the original colors were like there in the WS version, i love them, so, no problems for me. perfectly effective use of daylight long exposure. i should also go for an ND filter to get such results. i had been using f32 plus ISO 100 or something like that to reach 1 or 2 sec.s at daylight.

I tell ya' what, it sure looks good to me! :)
The tide has wiped the slate pristine clean in the foreground, the smooth finish to the sand is extraordinary, and the golden tones add a touch of additional warmth. The long exposure has of course created that silky appearance to the water, which gives this imagery a strong sentiment of a peaceful flow.
The colors are saturated nicely to be bold and attractive, and the sharp detail on those big rocks is outstanding...and I particularly like the soft highlights of reflected sun. "Beautiful" is an understatement! Enjoy the day ahead.

olive224 (2717) 2013-12-13 0:50
Apparently, this filter is known for this color cast problem so i guess you will have to check your white balance everytime in PP with the grey tones pipette in the curve adjustements panel...
By the way, the image is excellent !

beautiful return to Seychelles!
To be honest it´s quite hard to notice you had so huge problems to capture properly the colors or to set a right exposure.
The outcome we see here is really magnificent(also because your 3sec.exposure time).
I have no experience with ND filters,so I just hope other TE members will help you with this matter.
Have a nice day

I couldn't tell that you had the problems which you described. I think that you must be the expert on these now. Your slow shutter speed was very successful. However, there might have been some slight movement of the boats during the long exposure. A great image.

the typical Seychelles rocks in foreground, in this idyllic beach, stand out very graphically, but we enjoy a wonderful view of this landscape as well.
The clouds and the boats, they provide a high aesthetical quality at this image, which has a nice light and a beautiful colours.
I like the effect created on the foam of the waves because of the long exposure time.
A great work.

I will never stop being amazed at how the sea differs from one part of the world to another. Here, as you probably seen, we dont get emerald green and vivid blue water and golden beaches, we get grey water filled with creepy sticky seaweed, and beaches made of slightly sharp gravel :) I always remember as a child the grass that appeared to be made from razor blades. This memory makes my thoughts of a scene like this all the more intense, soft sand, gentle lapping waves, and you captured the spirit of that so nicely here.
the sky has a wonderful amount of activity, and the boats breaking the horizon are the icing on the cake.
Thanks as always, have a lovely weekend.
snunney (76350) 2013-12-13 4:24
I'm afraid colour correction is not one of my strong points, but this looks perfectly fine to me. It is well composed with the obliquely placed rocks drawing the viewer into the scene and helping to give the image depth. I like the light and colours. Very good rendering of the textural detail in those rocks.
timecapturer (41708) 2013-12-13 4:48
this looks so idyllic and a vision of the Seychelles that should be in the tourist brochure. I love the atmosphere the slow shutter speed has produced; it echoes the slow pace and beauty of this amazing beach. Stunning!
Have a great weekend - B.

Superb beach scene. I like the way you've composed the image with the boats sailing into the clear blue waters. Well done, have a great weekend.
williewhistler (11236) 2013-12-13 12:23
the diagonal lines work very well with the boats well placed to add interest.
I haven`t any advice on how to remove halos although colour balance and curves usually sorts out any colour cast for me when using the Big Stopper.
Kind regards Les.
Cricri (96885) 2013-12-14 11:00
macjake (49236) 2013-12-14 15:03
Oh i'm sure Lisa would truly enjoy a photo like this, but then again who wouldn't right!
personally I've never tried using the 10Stop filter in broad daylight...even though I do have one...guess I should try it at some point eh?
brave on you to give it a wirl here.
and even though you had to do some PP work to make it look to your satisfaction, the key areas around the large stones with the water does have that desired silky look to it. So all in all it was a success.
love seeing the ships in the bg too.
you asked about my wide angle lens in my previous Cuba photo..no..there were no PP done in regards to the distortions or angles...it is what it is.
I was seriously close to the men, only a foot or so away from them...but the wide angle allowed for all 3 to be in the scene.
its my favorite lens :)

A wonderful image ..... seems almost a dream, that such a nice beach with blue water on white sand, those pink rocks are a great addition, and another beautiful detail are those two ships in the distance, a set of great beauty.
Very nice colorful. very natural.
Sensational sharpness and brightness.
Good start to the week.
zanzi (13426) 2013-12-17 14:18
Ah, Anse Lazio ! A wonderful place.
10 stops filters are known to create colors nightmares. Mine, a Lee, is known for its blueish color cast.
I like the three seconds fx on the water.
My turn to be picky :-)
The wet sand in the fg and the right area are somehow less interesting: I would have cropped them out.
I stop my picky attitude ;-)
Bravo for this wonderful picture

Lovely beach, interesting effect with these waves and these rocks, pleasant view.
Bonne Année 2014 !

beautiful composition from paradise. I like the wide beach here with the typical rocks plus well colored sea water and the single boats of rich people. The sky is very interesting something one may not expect from a paradise.
