Photographer’s Note

Two talibé's in Yoff, Dakar. Talibé's are Kuran students, however in West-Africa they are often subject to abuse. Many talibé's in Dakar (and the rest of Senegal) have to beg for a living. Their teacher beats them up if they don't bring in enough money. They have to sleep on the streets and don't get food. (note: this is NOT a generalisation, many muslims teachers do good things)

These two talibé's could eat and get an education thanks to a Belgian project in Yoff. They were less miserable than other beggar children I've seen and instead of begging they were just smiling and walking with us while we were on our way to the project.
