Joal-Fadiout

The twin villages of Joal and Fadiout (Fadiouth) are 110 km south of Dakar. Joal, on the mainland, was the birthplace of poet and first Senegalese president Léopold Sédar Senghor. A long wooden bridge Joal is connected Fadiout.

Fadiout is build on an island that's made almost entirely of clam shells. Fadiout is home of an very interesting cementary of hundreds of Christian graves, each marked by a cross and a pile of shell, as well as hundreds of Muslim graves.

Das ist ein wirklich rundum interessanter Beitrag im Sinne von TE! Dieser Friedhof ist ja einfach unglaublich und diese Bäume wirken richtig gespenstisch in dieser ungewöhnlichen Umgebung. Ein tolles Foto aus einer "anderen Welt"!

When I was looking at this earlier I shared it with my family, a most amazing place!!! I have never seen anything like this!! I enjoy seeing pictures of cemetaries but this is the most unique ever! Fantastic detail!! TFS

Bonjour Achim,
un endroit très aride pris avec beaucoup de netteté et de maitrise des lumières très dures. Ces quelques arbres ont du mal à apporter un peu d'ombre.
Des couelurs assez douces qui se marient bien et un endroit naturellement calme.

Hello Achim,

This is a totally amazing place, first time I see a cemetery where shells make an important part!
I like the composition with inclusion of the trees, in fact they look a bit dried out too...
Good details in a place well worth to know about!

a nice reportage shot from Senegal with the Christian graves and the crosses to dominate the scene.I wonder how so many graves are found in a Muslim country.The shells in the WS complete the scene and make it more effective.

Very nuique cemetery in the desert with the white crosses standing out brilliantly in this rich textured golden sands.

Hi Achim,

The trees are framing well the cemetery. The point of view is allowing us to see the details and colors of the cross and of the shells. The blue sky is sending a light which has a good effect on the colors. Have a nice day.

Hi Achim,

Cemetery very simple and representative of these countries known as “poor”, it has only the crosses there to be found between all these identical tombs. Interesting photograph where these two trees bring the element of life in the image. I like much the quality of the photograph as well in clearness as in the management of the lights. Impressive contrast and quite unusual sight you have there, I would never have guessed those were all seashells... Were they brought up on shore or did they accumulate naturally??

A most amazing place...a village on an island made by clam shells! It's always a learning experience browsing your gallery, because of the amount of things we learn about the world! The trees look quite similar to baobabs, and maybe their close relatives. Thanks for the WS as well & the informative note!
