The main reason for visiting this part of Africa was of course, to meet the mountain gorillas. Sincerely, from what I've learnt before leaving, I supposed that the hardest thing during this trip should had been the trekking on the volcanoes to reach these fantastic and peaceful primates. On the contrary, I was lucky with the gorillas, but had a lot of difficulties in reaching and shooting chimpanzees. The walking tours were long and one time was really hard because of the muddy steep slopes and the thick vegetation of the forest (Kyambura Gorge - Uganda). Everytime when reached the chimps, they were on the top of the tall trees and what was possible to see of them, was only a quickly moving dark stain among the branches. So thanks to the newly bought, excellent 70-300mm VR Nikkor lens, had the possibility to make some decent pictures and to see how they looked like.

This one was taken in the Nyungwe National Park, a high-altitude, mountainous rainforest in southern Rwanda established as a forest reserve in 1933. The conservation area consists of approximately 970 square kilometers. The forest is located in the Albertine Rift, a series of mountain ranges beginning at the Rwenzori mountains in western Uganda and Congo, continuing south into the Lendu Plateau in eastern Congo. Contiguous with Kibira National Park in Burundi, Nyungwe is one of the largest mountainous rainforests remaining in Africa and recently the forest received National Park status. A gorgeous place to visit and to enjoy the peacefulness of a forest, out off the beaten tracks.

Hello Attila,

Very nice portrait of him while in deep thought and I think little curios during your shoot. Green leafs and body texture of trees are well detailed. Very informative note also about your shoot and place. Congratulations also for your new lens.

Friendly Regards,

Ertugrul

Szia Attila!
Kétségtelenül szimpatikus rokon, kellemes környezetben. Állatkerti társai tempóját ismerve van némi sejtésem arról, milyen kihívás lehetett elcsípni őkelmét.
Őszintén szólva legjobban mégis az adatoktól vagyok elhűlve: 300 mm mellett 1/25 sec idővel éles képet produkálni szabadkézből? Ha a főszabályt veszem, ehhez a gyújtótávolsághoz 1/250 sec (illetve az 1,5-es szorzó miatt inkább 1/500 sec) tartozna, a VR funkcióra a NIkon 3-4 fényértéket ígér - ezek szerint tartja is az igéretét. Lenyűgöző!
Jó hétvégét kívánok!
Laci

Hi Attila,
A successful capture of this chimpanzee sitting high in a tree. He is nicely framed by the tree, with especially the diagonal of the left foreground being very strong. The background of leaves works very well. Great photo work!
Regards,
Lars
