[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Murambi Genocide site was simply a collection of long, single-story school buildings on a green hilltop, unfinished at the time of the genocide. Tutsis from Gikongoro had concentrated here, as they did in public buildings and churches throughout Rwanda, hoping that the government or the church would protect them.

This was shot in the other end of the site, in front of the broken down building. Even before I got there a bunch of kids came running towards me. Then I realized that these kids live near the site where the atrocities and mass graves still stand as a testimony to Rwanda’s violent past. Wondered what they thought of visitors like me coming to look at their horrid past
Rwanda is a Francophone nation with Kinya-rwanda as the only other language. Few Rwandan’s are speak English.Yet the kid’s knew one sentence in English quite well “give me money”. The youngest of them tried to perform a song for me so I would give him some money. He waved his hands up in the air trying to reach up to the stars

After their display they were visibly disappointed when I still refused to give them money. They scratched their head as I tried to explain to them in my rudimentary French, mixed with English – “begging wrong” “non”.

Your photo of this wonderful smile, against a backdrop of stark detrita and ominous sky, is as poignant as your words are searing.
