Photographer’s Note

I'm doing my first mission in tuberculosis centers in Tillabery region and the last week end I stayed in Tabotakit a little village in sahelian region near Mali border.
The more than 65 million people in the nine Sahelian countries (Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Chad, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Senegal) are among the poorest and least food secure in the world. The region is marked by high rates of deforestation, soil degradation, erosion and population growth, as well as by weak political and private sector institutions.
In Niger, like in all Sahelian countries, access to potable water has always been a great worry for the people and for their leaders. This explains the considerable effort that has been made during the last two decades. Since 1980, close to 230 million euros have been spent on rural hydraulic works to build up 17,000 water points. This being the case, the success of the policy being implemented by the Niger authorities requires support for the emergence of a local private sector, on the one hand, and a "creditworthy" demand (i.e. a capacity of the local population to pay for and ensure sustainability of water services) for water from the local communities on the other.

Ciao,
You have a tough job over there and I applaud your efforts. Your note is very informative and helps appreciate the situation in the Sahelian countries. The photo gives an interesting glimpse of everyday life, where the scarce water sources are of paramount value. The off-center composition and selective focus are very good. Regards,

foto molto bella, nitida dai colori caldi. Ma è bella soprattutto perchè dovrebbe farci riflettere, noi che di acqua ne abbiamo in abbondanza, ogni volta che apriamo il rubinetto e magari ce lo dimentichiamo aperto. Fai bene a pubblicare queste foto. Bravo.

Carissimo Alberto! ci mandi sempre dei grandi profondi messaggi e ci fai riflettere. Interessante questo pozzo in mezzo al deserto, e interessante sapere del notevole stanziamento per dare acqua a questi poveri paesi desertici o deforestati.
Spero che tu stia bene e che tu abbia avviato il tuo lavoro.

spero ti sei rimesso in sesto , bella immagine toccante e nello stesso tempo ci deve far riflettere dell'importanza dell'acqua che e' vita . bel messaggio e spero che venga recepito da tutte quelle persone che pensano che per avere acqua basta girare un rubinetto .

Je suis encore eveille ce soir, l'esprit beaucoup toune vers la Birmanie, ce si beau pays a la population si douce qui risque encore de se retrouver dans un bain de sang dans les jours a venir. Mais la non-violence l'emportera peut etre tout en faisant vaciller ce qui ne peut plus decemment rester longtemps debout... Sans le savoir cette image que tu nous montres ce soir m'a fait penser une fois encore a la Birmanie ou de facon tout a fait incroyable, l'eau aussi est une denree rare dans beaucoup de regions, surtout d'ailleurs car toute l'infrastructure du pays est en deliquescence car tout l'argent va a l'armee. Ainsi si un puit est construit par un pays etranger, les villageois n'ont pas les moyens de payer le fuel necessaire a alimenter la pompe. Et pourtant cette population reste douce, si douce et agreable, dans tous leurs mouvements, c'est incroyable. Je retrouve cette douceur dans ta belle image avec ces quelques hommes et quelques betes qui viennent a ce point d'eau se ravitailler. Les couleurs sont tres belles, tres douces elles aussi et la vie va son train. Merci pour cette belle image!

grazie per le tue notizie dal Niger e soprattutto per quello che stai facendo laggiù.
La foto è ben composta. mostrando sia il punto acqua sia l'ambiente circostante.
Immagino che la luce fosse accecante, come non si trova alle nostre latitudini, ma tu sei riuscito a gestirla molto bene.

Ciao Alberto,
sembra una foto scattata tra gennaio ed aprile, durante la stagione secca insomma. Molto tipica del Sahel, con questi contenitori di plastica gialli, visti, come da te menzionato in Burkina, Mali e pure nel nord del Ghana. Ho appena letto che ti sei preso la malaria e che è tutto ok adesso. Auguri a prescindere!

Oi Alberto,

A foto esta perfeita com cores suaves e muita nitidez. A cena poderia tb ter saido do sertao brasileiro onde a seca castiga a populacao e criancas e mulheres andam kilometros para buscar agua, uma realidade que o governo atual diz estar melhorando... mas so vendo p crer. Bom saber que pelo menos em alguns paises a ajuda chega as pessoas interessadas e melhorando a vida cootidiana.
