Last sunday I could discover Niger river with some traditional fishermen: look at this beautiful landscape! I can't imagine it in dry season...
The origin of the name Niger is unknown. It would have been more likely for Portuguese explorers to have used their own word, negro, as they did elsewhere in the world, but in any case the Niger is not a blackwater river. Some have rationalized that 'black' may have referred to the color of the people living on the river, but this did not happen to any other river in Africa. The name is thus thought to be indigenous, but no convincing origin has been found among the thirty languages of the Niger delta and lower reaches of the river. One hypothesis is that it comes from the Tuareg phrase gher n gheren "river of rivers" (shortened to ngher), originating in the middle reaches of the river around Timbuktu.
The nations of Nigeria and Niger are named after the river. The people who live along it have a variety of names for it, such as Isa Ber ("big river" in Songhay, one of the Niger state languages).
The Niger River is a relatively "clear" river, carrying only a tenth as much sediment as the Nile because the Niger's headlands are located in ancient rocks that provide little silt. Like the Nile, the Niger floods yearly: this begins in september, peaks in november, and finishes by may.
An unusual feature of the river is the Niger Inland Delta, which forms where its gradient suddenly decreases. The result is a region of braided streams, marshes, and lakes the size of Belgium; the seasonal floods make the Delta extremely productive for both fishing and agriculture.
The Niger takes one of the most unusual routes of any major river, a boomerang shape that baffled European geographers for two millennia. Its source is just 150 miles (240 km) inland from the Atlantic Ocean, but the river runs away from the sea into the Sahara Desert, then takes a sharp right turn near the ancient city of Timbuktu (Tombouctou) and heads southeast to the Gulf of Guinea.

bellissimo paesaggio, mi piace molto la canoa in questo che sembra un lago piu' che un fiume , bellissima la luce e i colori molto caldi il cielo completa l'opera.

Ciao Alberto splendida vista sul Niger, la canoa è una deliziosa chicca in una composizione splendida che sa d'immenso, con questo fiume che sembra non avere confini e con lo splendido cielo colmo di nuvole.

Quel superbe paysage, quel calme extraordinaire, quelle immensité inspirante, quelles belles couleurs! Tu en as de la chance dis donc d'évoluer dans un tel cadre. Ta photo est magnifique, avec une si belle lumiere, un ciel si bien rendu, et une composition si equilibree avec cette barque qui passe paiblement sur le fleuve devant nous. Je suis seduit.

Bonsoir Alberto,
Je ne suis pas une habituée de l'Afrique. Je trouve très extraordinaire ce contraste entre le vert de la végétation dans et au bord de l'eau et l'aridité en haut des rives du fleuve. La lumière sur l'eau est très belle et le passage de la pirogue renforce l'impression de sérénité en apportant une touche d'humanité.

la foto è tutta molto bella, ma la fascia centrale è davvero spettacolare, la silhouette della canoa ed il bel verde dell'erba sono molto riusciti, ma mi piace sottolineare la sottile striscia di terra rossa sullo sfondo che lascia capire che ci si trova in Africa e che poco lontano siamo nel deserto.

Woow Alberto, complimenti! è un'immagine a dire poco pittoresca. Siccome questi paesi li visitiamo prevalentemente durante la stagione secca, non è facile vedere foto dal Niger in piena stagione delle piogge, che probabilmente è la più affascinante. Quindi un doppio grazie per queste chicche che ci regali dal tuo nuovo avamposto.

Un paisaje realmente interesante, buena perspectiva, la barca es importante en este trabajo, equilibra la composición y aporta vida al momento, colores espectaculares, has capturado una bella atmósfera, gracias por enseñarnos un poco más de este lugar.

Una toma preciosa a la que para mi gusto le sobra un centímetro de cielo para hacer más intensa la escena y que no haya distraciones.

che bello sentirti!!! Purtroppo ho avuto davvero poco tempo di navigare su TE ultimamente e allora lo utilizzavo solo per caricare le mie foto (egoista!) così ti ho perso di vista anche se ricordavo la tua nuova avventura in Niger.
Mi prenderò presto il tempo per riflettere sulle tue sempre interessanti note e per seguirti più da vicino in futuro.
Sempre belle le canzoni che scegli come testo nelle note... Ismael Lo è tra i miei preferiti..
Quanto alla foto è un tributo al Niger, questo grande fiume, arteria di vita per questi paesi ove la vita é molto dura.
