Residents of the Namib desert: Spotted Eagle-owl; meagre thicket in the middle of rocky desert, not far from Swakopmund.

The Spotted Eagle-owl (Bubo africanus) is a medium-sized species of owl, one of the smallest of the Eagle owls. Its height is forty-five cm (18 inch) and its weight is from 480 to 850g (1 to 1.8 pounds). The facial disk is off white to pale ochre and the eyes are yellow. It has prominent ear tufts, and the upper body is dusky brown, the lower parts off-white with brown bars. Its prey consists of small mammals, birds, insects and reptiles.
Spotted Eagle-owls inhabit most of Africa south of the Sahara desert away from dense forests. They are nocturnal hunters, spending the day concealed in trees, rock ledges or abandoned burrows. They are found in areas with rocky outcroppings, scrub land, open woods, and semi deserts. Spotted Eagle-owls do not avoid populated areas. They often hunt near roads and are often struck by vehicles. The major cause of death is pesticides used in agriculture for insect and rodent control.

Witam!
Kolejny ciekawy kawałek Afryki pokazujesz. Pewnie miałeś teleobiektyw? Ja kilka miesięcy temu też sobie takowy sprawiłem. Teraz czekam na lepszą pogodę, dłuższe dni, żeby wybrać się na fotograficzne łowy.

Hi Andrzej,

Very nice!! I tried spotting some in the North of the Netherlands, but they are very difficult to catch. Quite often high in the trees or very well hidden.
In Angola we had big owls in an old tree and in the village people thought that it were some kind of 'dragons' that would eat children, since you'd only hear them fly at night and see their eyes in the light. Spooky...
