[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Ok there are probably already 568308 posts of the “deadvlei” on TE… (which means this one is the 568309th) but well I felt like posting another one.
This tree (who is a kind of “superstar tree” considering the attention he’s got – may I remind you the 568309 posts?) and this dune in the background are for me (and for a lot of people who severely abuse drugs) a sort of metaphor of different life destinies:
- The torturous path (as beautifully suggested by our superstar tree)
- The smooth path (as magnificently suggested by Miss dune)
Whatever path you have to take, may God bless you all (Oh no! Vincent! Delete this last sentence, it’s really poor….Actually delete the whole thing!! What? Oups too late)

Compositionally, I really like this, though I think it might benefit from a tad more contrast while dodging the larger tree to pull out a little more shadow detail.

Hi Vincent (it's been awhile, hasn't it??;-),

Excellent shot, not only in a visual sense, but also in a philosophical and symbolic. Good composition with the placed a bit on the left side of the picture, black and white work perfectly here and the dunes in the background amazingly close the composition. You seem to become a master of black and white photography, man.

Hi Vincent, most of the other posts must have been in colour as this is not a tree I am familiar with (certainly not on first-name terms anyway ;-) ). Unlike 'gravatar', I think you've hit exactly the right degree of contrast. Too much more and I think the image would have taken on a purely graphic quality, losing some of the depth that it now shows. Compositionally, it's spot on of course, using the classical L-composition. VERY nice work. Stephen

Very poetic image Vincent... Can't see much wrong with it myself (cf above). Can I see a cockroach crawling around the dead tree? There might be anyway. Regards Paul.

Hi Vincent,
just flicking through the gallery and came across this great image. I like B&W and this is great, really contrasty and good POV. Haven't seen any others like this on TE so this is "deadvlei" no 1 for me.

Great landscape! The tree and sand really do seem to represent different facets of life. I like the texture of the dunes and the tree dominating the left side of the photo. The B/W works really well, too.

oh la la my friend see you becoming quite dramatic i must say.....;)
and those pointilanas are ever increasing... i better watch out or you will certainly catch up...
hi vincent, yes quite dramatic indeed, lovely landscape and offcourse b&w is always more effective. good pov and perspective. and if it is a worthy cause i will certainly make a donation to 'broken poets' he!he!. well done nice work : ))

I didn't see the other versions yet, I have seen only your two, both very beautiful but perhaps I prefer that of the WS, where the tree (already too much protagonist... seems me to understand...) contends the scene with the dune and makes the composition more balanced.

Well I really like both but I guess the closer version hits me most at the moment - tonally very nice range - stark and subtle variations.
