Namibia is in the middle of the annual rainy season but so far this year the rain has been sporadic. In this shot, from my archives, you can see that the rains were unusually good; Sossusvlei isn’t seen like this very often! The river flows along what is normally the road into the dunes. Fabulous to see but requiring a long hike to the vlei itself which entailed wading through water and much huffing and puffing!

This is really something different! I can imagine such sand dunes sucking moisture so quickly that such event can't possibly last very long.
Lovely mixture of colours too, from blue sky, reddish sand and fresh green trees.

River in Sossusvlei, it is really amazing. But in fact, when we were there, there was a quite big pools and I was surprised to see many flowers and green. How I like these red sands! Excellent composition. nice memories for me too.
Warm regrads Malgo

Congratulations for this beautiful (and colorful) picture.
I like the colors, of course, especially the red sand color, but also the sky. And this river is quite amazing in such a desertic landscape.

A very beautiful landscape with this color for the ground, interesting with the water, good depth effet with the FG.

the red sand looks magnificent and I love the way it contrasts to the blue sky and greenery around. It makes the composition really expressive and so beautiful!
Excellently composed and executed shot!

A lovely composition where the water leads from the f/g to a strong vanishing point. The soft ripples on the water's surface seem to be emulated in the surface of the sand.
Having said all this, to be honest, it is the colours that hit most dramatically. As you know, coming from a very green country, this is just out of my experience!!
Have a lovely w/e,

what a view. The land with red soil made your composition just beautiful. The river flows through it is looking superb with the trees beside the river bed. Great sky at top to accompany this pleasant view. Nicely framed. Superb shot. Tfs.

An excellent illustration of RGB palette !
Beautiful scenery well in the line of how I imagine this part of Namibia

Huffing and puffing sounds a bit energetic to me:-) But, it was certainly worth it to capture this magnificent view. The rich red tones of the sand dunes are superb and contrast beautifully with that lovely sky. I like the point of view and the way the river enters the frame on the bottom right and continues to the vanishing point. The green trees look a bit eerie against what could otherwise stand in for a Martian landscape.

This is a striking image for composition, colours and contrast. Well worth the trek to get there and document this place.

Hi Rosemary. Fascinating juxtaposition of the sands and the life giving water- a most unusual "dance." Dramatic colours and unexpected scenery. best wishes. Klaudio.

a topical title and image for us here in the south of England. Although my river does not looks as amazing from a colour perspective as this one does. The mix of colours is just stunning and the effect other worldly and beautiful. Glorious image - I love it!
Enjoy the weekend - B.

Sergiom (77323) 2014-01-24 5:43

I'm fascinated by that red soil or sand lending its color to the river. A very unusual color, at least for me. It makes a stunning contrast with the blue sky and the trees, everything's so saturated, warm and alive...just what I like. Lovely image.
Thanks and best wishes!

Yes, it is indeed fabulous. The red sand creates a wonderful contrast with the greens and the sky. The river is placed nicely in the frame. The long hike paid rich dividend... and we are lucky to see a marvelous landscape. Thanks for sharing.

Ciao e buona serata
dekanski (5108) 2014-01-24 12:42
after all these comments I have nothing to add! Just to point out the wonderful contrast of three colors: blue sky, green tree tops and reddish sand!
carlo62 (46413) 2014-01-24 14:02
kwekwekan (1078) 2014-01-24 15:36
You have some great landscapes from Namibia in your gallery and this one is no exception! The muddy river adds a great fourth colour to the red/green/blue combo and the texture of the wind-swept sand - especially visible in the larger version - is very well captured with just the right amount of sharpness.
Have a great weekend,
npecanhuk (74814) 2014-01-24 15:41

A wonderful composition. I really like that gentle slope of the red dune in the foreground.
Splendid colour contrasts.
Best regards, Paul

a beautiful photo of this place with spectacular composition and splendid colours, great impression,
macjake (67022) 2014-01-25 3:44
you know...sometimes when I view these landscape photos from Namibia I feel as if we're almost looking at a different planet!
Are you sure this is planet earth? :)
I really like the sweeping curves, the way the scene forms itself...almost as if a large snake is winding its way across my computer screen.
wickedly odd colors with all that orange.
Subhogen (4067) 2014-01-25 7:08
I have never seen such coloured soil on earth. What a view. The river seems so strange and out of place in this barren and parched land. The contrast between the sky and the land is eye-catching. Very nice photo, thanks for sharing.
Cricri (117853) 2014-01-25 11:53
COSTANTINO (64178) 2014-01-26 1:26
impressive shot with impressive colors
shot divorsed into three parties
the brown foreground the river and
the amazing blue sky
the green trees add color and freshn ess
the river is quite amazing in such a desert
have a nice Sunday
CLODO (33992) 2014-01-26 6:13
I am surprised by the orange hues of the shot meaning that it's muddy as the river snakes between the green trees.
Big rain also on the south west of France
Noel_Byrne (30483) 2014-01-26 7:34
To jump from your post from Kerry to this just emphasizes the differences around the world, this is an amazing sight! I think Ive said before how beautiful I find this red sand, and especially with the fine blue sky to contrast it. The river cuts the image perfectly and creates a very surreal and amazing landscape. I love that we can see so many shapes in the sand dunes too.
cornejo (41337) 2014-01-26 11:01

Superb composition and a stunning contrast to the colorful landscape, the red beauty of this land, with patches of blue sky and clouds of the most pictorial, trees add beauty and the course of the river, gives a great perspective to the image.
Very good management of both the brightness and the sharpness.
The color is great, very well balanced.
Very good job. I love
I wish you a happy week.
Best wishes ..

Just wrote to Jason that desert is an earth formation - not a weather pattern, and it seems to me the same text apply to this wonderful photo, Rosemary.
Beautiful red/brown soil, so known from Namibia, and the river full with erossion in its light-brown tone, superb in contrast.
Well taken shot, clarity and outlines immaculately collected.

Water must be so necessary there! Beautiful landscape, the colour of the earth is perfect. Good shot with a very good pov! I also like the rain season, I got some rain in Senegal and I didn't mind at all:)!
