In the early morning light, a lone Oryx grazes on sweet seasonal grass on the gravel plains beneath the towering dunes lining the road to Sossusvlei. For anyone wishing to see the wonderful contrasting light on the dunes this is the time of day to be there. By mid-day the colours are leached from the landscape

A fascinating landscape with almost surreal colours. The oryx is very well placed and sort of counterbalances the sunlit portion of the dunes, which take on a sculptured look. A well constructed landscape composition that merges minimalism with the abstract.

Very nice capture from Sossusvlei with perfect pov and good layout.
Srrong side light from left creates perfect shadows and the yellow and orange stripes nice graphism.
TFS and have a nice weekend

I love shots like this, not something you see in England! It is the light and shadows here that make this so attractive and beautiful. Such elegant curves and shapes that tantalise the viewer. Add a little element of wild life to give scale and you have a winning image. Love it!
Enjoy your weekend - B.

Typical Namibian scenery
The yellow grass is really amazing, almost fluo !
have a nice WE, best regards

Subhogen (4065) 2013-11-30 4:33
Though the title is Lone Oryx, the eye catching part of your shot is the wonderful shadow light play on the dunes. Great contrast between the light side and the shadow side brings out edge of the dune perfectly. Beautiful shot with vivid colours and light.
trevormoffiet (3112) 2013-11-30 4:39
Beautiful light, colours, contrasts and shapes. Namibia must be on every photographer's bucket list and you have it at your backdoor. The image is well proportioned using rule of thirds. Even the Oryx is perfectly positioned on a third-by-third crosshair.
Well-captured and framed.

Amazing colors and contrasts in this scene. Wonderful place, well spotted wildlife too.
Enjoy a great weekend.
Sergiom (61210) 2013-11-30 5:06
fotka (3565) 2013-11-30 5:14
It is beautiful combination of light and shadow in early morning sun. I like the vivid strong colors. The single Oryx added life to this wonderful landscape.
Well done, congratulations!
rbassin (18529) 2013-11-30 6:14
willperrett (7348) 2013-11-30 6:48
Such dramatic lighting. And the placement of the lone oryx balancing the diagonal sunlit slope is masterly. Great work.
olive224 (2719) 2013-11-30 7:37
Those bright and saturated colors are great, the oryx seems really lost in this immensity
holmertz (41797) 2013-11-30 7:42
The oryx is a nice detail, and you placed it very well in the composition, but it really meets tough competition for our attention from the spectacular colours and light of the huge dunes and the grass. It's a fabulous photo,
Noel_Byrne (24852) 2013-11-30 8:09
Big smiley face on me looking at this :)
Your gallery is making a mission for me to get to Namibia and see this for myself some day, and if the day comes and I can take a shot half as good as this, I will be very pleased. These dunes just fascinate me, the way they play with light, their ever evolving shapes, and the lunar landscape that surrounds them.
A major bonus in this to have the Oryx too, it is an important element in the scene, and its size shows really well the immense scale of the dunes. I am eternally fascinated by these kind of shots. Thanks as always for sharing, have a great weekend!
All the best

I don't know how these colors can be captured in a chip. I don't know how such uniform sharpness can be achieved throughout the whole frame. I don't know how long one should wait till only one object is to be found in such a vast panorama.
And I am not going to spend any adjective to appreciate this piece of art, because my stock of adjectives is limited.
I will only say - Thank you Rosemary for your presentation that I will remember for years to come.
With warm regards,

Ciao Rosemary, fascinating landscape, fantastic light and wonderful warm colors, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio
krzychu30 (15498) 2013-11-30 13:49
beautiful and fascinating photo!
The combination of so soft and warm light and strong, vivid colors make your composition really exceptional!
jjcordier (76860) 2013-11-30 23:33
lousat (77848) 2013-12-01 1:51
Hi Rosemary, great contrast and very high saturation to create the best effect from this spectacular place and hour, maybe over the limits of real but really beautiful and with a special atmosphere,i like it! Have a nice Sunday and thanks,Luciano
Romano46 (18466) 2013-12-01 4:53
Ciao e buona domenica
CLODO (30597) 2013-12-01 7:28
I was not sure of the title looking at the thumnail where the big orange diagonal line was bursting out of the dark shadow; Opening the image, I discovered the antilope quietly eating the yellow grass. A superb light well caught, a well managed and forecast picture.
Highmountains (2255) 2013-12-01 7:29
We don't usually see hills rise out of flat plain ground. The scene itself is extraordinary.
Then the colours and image - sharp, saturated and deep. The sun and shade creates on the hills is almost breathtaking...
The yellow green grass of the plains with the lone oryx makes the photograph mesmerizing...
Excellent composition and great work.
Thanks for sharing, Rosemary.
eldancer1 (28529) 2013-12-01 7:55
Beautiful lighting of this awesome landscape! This oryx must feel very lucky to have this whole place to himself. Good pov and sharp details. Wonderful colors. Well done, tfs.
marabu61 (8593) 2013-12-01 10:23
The wonderful early morning light has rendered the landscape and the imposing dunes soft as a painting. The lonely Orynx is well camouflaged in the landscape and what a beautiful animal it is.
have a great sunday
Angshu (55936) 2013-12-02 2:22
Fascinating shot...a cracker at least!
While the lone Oryx is definitely one of the main attractions, to me the cherry on the cake is how the light falls the left side of the dune and the contrast with the shaded parts creates a fine 3D effect. Loved the layers on the ground as well. Congratulations for this super shot!
This is a fav for me!
mkamionka (30694) 2013-12-04 6:39
the landscape itself is so beautiful and would be spectacular alone but the animal adds so much life and interest here. Amazing wildlife photo and captured in a beautiful light as well. I like the smooth lines made by the sand dunes. Very attractive play of the light and shadow.
ChrisJ (99338) 2013-12-07 14:35
The solitary 4 legged antelope like oryx (good word for a scrabble game) animates the scene and provides a centre of interest. Wonderful warm cold color contrast between the yellow green tussock grass, the red earth and dunes and the blue sky. Punchy light contrasts with nice sharpness. Tfs and a great weekend to you!
delpeoples (53167) 2013-12-07 23:26
The landscape really dwarfs this lone Oryx. What a stark, barren landscape it looks too. Hard to imagine being able to get any nourishment out of it at all. I love the stark colours, the textures and the Rule of Thirds framing. Excellent work, thanks for sharing, have a great Sunday.
rigoletto (34269) 2013-12-09 8:02
that thin line of bright yellow and the sunlit face of the dune... once again the marks of a talented eye. very elegant nature photo. brava!
seb1lopez (187) 2013-12-13 1:21
u choosed the right moment, and the right light! this is the kind of place that can look as an usual african pic, but u did it the right way, and ur title focus the eye on the animal;) ... just that I would have loved to see this animal lill more on the right and closer, but we don t choose! great and strong pic anyway
adores (37641) 2013-12-16 15:57
This is fantastic, the landscape, the composition with the oryx and the fantastic morning light. Such a magical moment, great work!
