The sand dunes at Sossusvlei are the highest in the world. Namibia is a great African country to visit and I would recommend it to anyone slightly nervous about visiting Africa. The roads are very well maintained even though most are gravel. Namibia gained independence from South Africa in 1990 after a war. However, the infrastructure built by South Africa has been reasonably well maintained. There are about 3 million people in a vast country and the second least densely populated in the world (according to Wikipedia. Much is desert but is stunningly beautiful with very different rock formations. The sightings of animals are less frequent (except in Etosha) than in typical safari countries because of the harsh conditions but the thrill of coming across them is wonderful. The standard of accommodation can be excellent, whether tented camps, lodges or the hotels/guesthouses in the capital of Windhoek. Anyone interested in star gazing should visit the Sossusvlei area (or indeed other areas of Namibia)as there is no light pollution.

Hi Ann. Welcome to Te with this amazing shot of a minimalist. Excellent work with beautiful juxtaposition of the subject in the frame with long shadow. Great shot and thanks for sharing. Regards - Jusni

Welcome to TE with this superb composition. These dunes are well known but rarely presented as nicely as here. The two trekkers are perfectly placed in the oval area lit by the sun. The texture of the sand is amazingly beautiful. It's a sophisticated picture that doesn't need anything else than these simple features.

Complimenti! Come esordio su TE niente male! Proprio bella questa tua foto, bellissima la luce e interessante anche la composizione con le due figure relegate in alto sulla duna! Ben fatto!!

this is a beautiful and special photograph with which to introduce yourself to TE: welcome! The oval of light plays like a spotlight on a magical stage. Love the colour, light and texture here. Simple yet satisfying and of course graphically pleasing. I will add it to my theme "Graphically Pleasing" if that's ok with you.

weetrees (15) 2010-10-31 13:37
this is special as everyone has already noted
the light in the hollow is what tops off the magical scene perfectly
a great shot and truly special moment
magalik (6101) 2010-10-31 13:50
Very nice shot showing your sense of quality. The sharpness is perfect, the composition also with the humans well placed and the nice break of contrasts brought by the clear zone.
A shot very coloured, very pleasant.
Welcome to TE.

The two hikers along the crest of the hill, virtually monochromatic, except for the contrast in light and shadow, make this an astonishingly beautiful photo. Warm regards, and I intend to select you among my favorites, even with so few images submitted.

Hi Ann, and welcome to TE! What an introduction! And a long time favourite of mine. Perfectly composed and the little whisps of sand blowing off the ridge just add to the magic.
Have you tried doing a workshop yet? A great way to try out your pp skills.
All the best, Bob

i also like this beautifull one. Great light and colors and excellent composition. The light on the sand in the wind is great.

What a great scene of the desert! It's like a painting. Congratulations.
siolaw (38052) 2010-11-04 3:40
That is an excellent take! The light is perfectly managed , framing is just right too, and the beauty of the very subject is doubtless...
A wonderful first post!

my wife is a "born, bred and fed" Namibian, who remembers Sossusvlei as a personal playground from her childhood - and sometimes has a good moan about the same-old-same-old nature of some of the TE shots. Your work here, though, is a different story and impressed us both: a fresh and original viewpoint of a well photographed sight. Great management of the light and colours, and a wonderful use of the human interest angle. Thanks and regards, Iain

I liked the feeling of a cliff, the extending shadows. My only suggestion would be to have a breathing space above.
mafegan (8624) 2010-11-05 13:56
An excellent photo with the 2 hikers perfectly positioned in the sunlight amongst the dunes. The detail of the orange sand the wisp of blown sand at the crest of the dune make this a special composition. Thanks for sharing, Marlene
reijame (577) 2010-11-09 8:42
a great shot, sharp throughout, and with that distinctive Namibian color. The people are just in the right spot, casting their shadows nicely on the other side of the dune. I also like the way the wind blows the sand on top of the ridge. Although superficially a plain picture, there is plenty for the eye to see. Congrats!

Wonderful composition that expressed huge dune.
gmg (4202) 2010-11-26 5:00
This is a very beautiful shot, with nice composition. The ray of light that touches just the top of the dune emphasizes the two hikers and projects wonderful shadows.

C'est une des plus belles photos rencontrées sur ce site. J'aime beaucoup le graphisme et les couleurs des dunes, ainsi que la présence des deux randonneurs sur la partie éclairée.
Du très beau travail !

ann hello,oh this is one wonderfull pic,it has everything in it for me,light, color, people, wonderfull POV too! dr
KristinsCamera (2373) 2013-08-09 20:28
Ann, this is a beautifully designed shot!
The composition is unusual and very attractive, the orange sands are stunning, and the two trekkers give an interesting focal point, as do their long shadows. The light is very attractive, as are the patterns in the sand.
This photograph and your note have sold me on Namibia ~ it's on the list! :)
tyro (19080) 2013-11-30 18:34
I was just doing a bit of browsing and just thought that I would look way back and see what sort of pictures people had posted when they first started on TE. And, of course, I came upon this one - your first TE upload! And what a picture it is!! This stunning picture would indeed be very hard to better.
This is not, of course, a photograph taken by a "tyro" nor anyone with no knowledge nor "eye" for a good photograph but it is a superbly composed image with lovely light and colours and excellent details and sharpness.
But, as always with great pictures, it is the light, yes, the light, which makes this so special - those two walkers, caught in a bright patch of light as they trundle across these sandy dunes.
A beautiful and striking photograph which far surpasses almost anyone's first TE upload!
adidas5nb (4504) 2013-12-27 22:43
A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! ...just love this one.there is a sense of adventure and wilderness.. and the frame is so perfect with the shadows and the curves of the dunes.
macjake (53320) 2013-12-27 22:49
what a beauty!
you've really hit the mark on this one.
I'm sure there's not much of anything I could say that the other members havn't said :)
but i do have to say that the elongated shadows and the hint of light are stupendous!
one of your best posts ever.
Kaisa71 (228) 2014-02-02 0:17
Great composition, colors and structure of the sand. These two people make the image interesting and see the little wind in the sand on their left side. Thanks for sharing this image.
