Kolmanskop is a ghost town in southern Namibia, a few kilometres inland from the port of Lüderitz. It was a small mining village and is now a popular tourist destination.

It developed after the discovery of diamonds in the area in 1908, to provide shelter for workers from the harsh environment of the Namib Desert. The village was built like a German town, with facilities like a hospital, ballroom, power station, school, skittle-alley, theater and sport-hall, casino, ice factory and the first x-ray-station in southern Africa. It also had a railway line to Lüderitz.

The town declined after World War I as diamond prices crashed, and operations moved to Oranjemund. It was abandoned in 1956 but has since been partly restored. The geological forces of the desert mean that tourists can now walk through houses knee-deep in sand.

What an interesting feeling here. House in the middle of nowhere. Great sand tones, almost no vegetation. A great catch.

this is the third ghost town/village shot i am commenting on tonight andrzej.. and it is so beautiful... the soft evening (morning?) light seems to have painted this house with warm pinkish tones... a real feast to the eye...

all the best

The photo is interesting and pleases me very well. It contains the things (contents of, composition, contrasts, lighting effect, realization etc.), which make a photo worth seeing. Best regards, Wolfgang.

Witaj Andrzej!
Dotarłeś do wspaniałego miejsca. Miasto w którym wybuchła kiedyś gorączka diamentów. Chyba faktycznie może teraz tam straszyć wiele duchów niespokojnych eksploratorów tych drogocennych kamieni. Znalazłeś coś dla siebie ;)....
Niesamowite miejsce. Kolorystyka podkreśla krajobraz pustynny.

Hi Andrzej,

Oh, I like to walk around in places like this! Very nice and a good note to it as well. Wondering what you could all see in this house?! Thanks for sharing!

Greetings,
Dennis

Cześć
Nie wiem czemu kojarzy mi sie z takim trochę głupim filmem "Wzgórza mają oczy"-takie miasto opuszczone, zapomniane gdzieś na pustyni. Ładnie wyszło, dobre kolory i kadr
pozdrawiam
M

Hi Andrzej,

I see you go on exploring Africa and bringing back very nice shot from that continent. This atmosphere of that old abandonned house in the middle of nowhere is amazing. Nice vivid colours and light and good sharpness as well.
Nice job!
Quentin.

Hi Andrzej, I like a lot ghost towns: I saw something similar in Cambodia. It's stunning to see something like that in the midst of desert.
Congratulations for light: I know it's not so easy in the desert!

No doubt shaped by greed and lust for money, this town (or the single example of the town remainings) conveyes an eerie feeling. Very interesting shot.

This is a very good one. I like the most the great exposure on your picture. Well light control! Amazing. It woul dhave been over-under exposed if lack of control. You did it. Well done. Sothy

Hi Andrzej,

Quelles belles couleurs !
Et quelle belle compo !
Bien vu.

Hi Andrzej,
I have always wanted to visit this place, it looks amazing. There is great clarity to your shot and we can see all the wonderful detail on this building and I like that we can see the building in the distance too. Good off centre composition from a nice angle so that we can see the side of the building aswell. Lovely light. Nice work!
Regards
Wanda
