This shot was taken at the same location as the one I last posted. Here though the view is towards the interior of the country rather than the sea. The shifting dune belt runs down almost to the sea and driving between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay is a surreal experience as one is sandwiched between the high dunes (230 to 498 feet tall) and the ocean. With the increase in visitors to Namibia designated areas in the coastal national park have been allocated to leisure activities; sand-boarding, quad biking, camel trekking and paragliding are all available.

what a fabulous place to go wind-surfing and your capture demonstrates the drama and amazing beauty of the setting perfectly. Stunning image!

The para-gliders sit beautifully against the rich red tones of the sand dunes which take on a sculptured look here. Excellent technical presentation.

A beautiful photograph and a very interesting note you have provided too. But, I must say, this sport would not be for me. A past colleague of mine who was a very expert paraglider (and was up to competition standards in the sport) by sheer fluke suffered a nasty landing, broke his back and is permanently paralysed from the lower chest down. Having said that, I presume that those who are really competitive in the sport (as he was) fly in "highly tuned" paraglders with very slim wings and I can imagine that they are a bit like racing cars - far faster, more skittish and twitchy and inherently unstable than an ordinary road car.
Anyway, this is a delightfully composed shot, the soft undulations in the sand dune making a fine backdrop to those colourful wings dotted about the frame. And, for once, the row of vehicles in the foreground does not seem at all upsetting - usually motor cars and vans are the bane of any photographer!
Gorgeous soft light, lovely vibrant colours and exquisite details and sharpness.

this shows so well how the photographer can control the mood of a place. As I looked at your last post it seemed to be so far away from mankind as to be the middle of nowhere but to turn around and see this is amazing! Not only an unexpected burst of human activity but activity in an explosion of the wildest and most vibrant colors! These colors look truly beautiful against the sand. Surprising and most enjoyable shot
all the best

The para-gliders (and the cars) add a lot of colours to this picture. The para-gliders also provide interesting shadows over the sand dunes. Even without these modern things, this would have been a beautiful picture with the softly rounded forms of the sand below the blue sky.

great pov and effect created here.love the colors against a banal bg and surroundings.great light.

I particularly enjoyed the larger version, today!
Tourism is a great, economic boost to a country and provision has to be made to accommodate the activities of the tourists. These people will spread the word about the facilities.
A scene that is quite captivating.
The fact that the paragliders are still below the height of the dunes gives us some understanding of their scale.
Your composition has used the main body of the dune for the activities, with the line of cars and the sky working as good separators, compositionally speaking.
My warm regards,
rychem (16404) 2014-02-04 9:46
Excellent photo, beautiful high dunes and nice silhouettes of para gliders, they look like colorful points against the slope of the dune. Splendid photo
krzychu30 (14986) 2014-02-04 10:54
this landscape itself looks fascinating, almost like it would be out of this world. But paragliders make this place so lively and also help you to achieve so expressive graphical effect of the composition.
Have a nice evening
marina7 (8007) 2014-02-04 11:08
a very eye-catching photo thanks to those paragliders contrasting with the gorgeous sand of the desert and perfect sky. What I find amazing here is the super soft texture of the sand with the gentle shadows on it. Wonderful.

You were at the right place, at the right moment and did the best photo job here!
Superb colors, light, chosen pov and composition!
TFS - congrats,

trevormoffiet (1800) 2014-02-05 1:41
A fabulous image with the bright colours against the sand dunes. I love all of the activity showing various stages of paragliding: some in the air some on the ground and some packed up. What really catches my eye though are the three on the right. They would probably make a nice composition on there own using a portrait crop either including or excluding the sky.
abmdsudi (36288) 2014-02-05 8:07
Brilliant action image, I know how you feel. Dunes must be a great place for paragliding, one of those sports where you need to be a little bit brave but the sense of freedom and vastness is tremendous and it must be amazing to do that. You have timely captured the thrill really well, excellent focus, love the contrasting colours, pov and exposure with a marvelous soft backdrop and bit of blue is a superb colour breaker. Your descriptions add immensely to this image, Congrats

excellent composition with admirable bright colors. great job.

Hello Rosemary ,
quite often in summertime there are a few foolhardy souls who indulge in para gliding off of some of the tors on Dartmoor when the wind is in the right direction,at least here an unplanned landing appears to involve fewer risks of a rocky landing.
The colourful gliders are nicely dotted throughout the scene giving lots to enjoy.
Kind regards Les.

Nice, I do not know why, somewhat reminds me of the Hieronymus Bosch (especially left side)!

Nice shot! Barren sand dunes made productive by the active movement of elements present in this photo. What a lovely place to paraglide. The sand dune gives a feeling that i'll be safe if ever I crash.:-)
fabbs99 (14403) 2014-02-06 22:51
Truly a spectacular view of the flying baloons and desert. Nice image, sharp with good details, well saturated colors and nice composition. Well done. TFS.
ktanska (23416) 2014-02-06 23:41
I can imagine winds are quite favourable for paragliding over there. Wind from the sea warms up above desert and rises agaist that dune. Well framed action shot where those colourful gliders show clearly against sand.
RhodieIke (11017) 2014-02-06 23:49
Love this, the colours of the parachutes are fantastic against the gorgeous sand dunes. Fantastic light.
Agree with Trevor another photo crop on those three guys on the left.

Wow! What a superb scene here! An interesting shot with a great composition and perfect quality. Very well seen and taken image. Like it a lot!
Have a nice weekend!
ChrisJ (93406) 2014-02-13 4:05
It looks like there aren't too many camels in the Kalahari if any so the enterprising locals have done well to think of an alternate money spinner for the tourists with the hang gliders. If it was a case of byo then these 4wd enthusiasts have planned well ahead! Good sharpness and warm cold colour contrasts. Tfs!

kato (11066) 2014-02-21 13:32
You're capturing well this place and activity by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see shifting dune belt with beautiful color and the spectacle in which tourists are enjoying the paraglider on dune. It's also impressive in colorful parafoil and the its shadow projected to the dune. And, it's harmonized well with blue sky.
GyurMaster (385) 2014-03-01 12:04
Excellent composition and lights!
adores (32674) 2014-03-02 15:45
A very good composition and the best pov! The paragliders add a lot of colour to the place. I also like their shadows and the line of jeeps. Tourists seem really small from a distance but they seem to be enjoying the moment. Beautiful colours!
