This old army truck was photographed near the Fish River Canyon in the south of Namibia. I have no idea who, why or when it was abandoned in the dry river bed but I know that it has been there since early 2000 at least. Over the years it has lost its canvas canopy and the frame that use to support it. If you look carefully you can see a few bullet holes in the bodywork and my guess is that someone has used it for target practice. Looking at the vehicle one can see evidence that the river has flowed quite rapidly as long grasses have been caught and wrapped around the axle and tyre. The truck has sunk into the sand too. Perhaps it was abandoned when it got stuck. Who knows?
A closer crop can be seen in the workshop
If any car enthusiasts can tell me what make this vehicle is, I’d be really pleased. My research has drawn a blank!

Lovely old truck. I guess it has been stuck for some years there...I love the warm colors.
Have a nice day.

I see we have both posted shots from Namibia today of things abandoned. What a great old photogenic truck that is being claimed by nature. Nice angle of view here to get the full length of the truck in and also show us some of the beautiful surrounding Namibian landscape which has become its new home. Great colours and sharpness too.

Hello Rosemary ,
These old trucks in the sand are superb photographic subjects .
An effect ife framing , and a beautiful light . May be it would have been better with some clouds in the sky , but all the conditions are not always perfect ;)

love old wrecks like this, they always capture the imagination and make such good subjects. It is strange how abandonment and decay can also be in its own way beautiful and characterful. I suppose boats and vehicles are things that are loved and it touches the emotions when they are left to rot somewhere. Execution and presentation wonderful as always.

An interesting note about this place and a fabulous photograph of this abandoned lorry gradually becoming overwhelmed by Nature as it continues to sink into the desert sands. I'm glad that your story didn't suggest that the bullet holes were due to the occupants having been attacked by bandits.
You have coped with the intense light and strong contrasts exceedingly well to produce a photograph with lovely vibrant colours, good composition and exquisite details and sharpness. Being complementary colours, the yellows/browns of the lorry contrast superbly well with the clear azure sky.

Maybe this truck was actually abandoned when being shot at? Did you make sure there was no skeleton inside? :-) It's a beautiful wreck and the fading colours and rusty patches are fantastic. It seems to be developing a natural camouflage and will eventually become part of the environment. It's a very beautiful shot and I am sure Craig will just love this.

Nice composition of this skeleton of a truck stuck in the Namibian landscape. One wonders about the effort required to remove the motor at this location. Perhaps it was removed before dumping.

J'aime beaucoup cette composition. Elle ressort dans la galerie par ses couleurs très affirmées. C'est très beau une carcasse de camion qui rouille dans le sable, surtout sous cette lumière très avantageuse.

Stuck, and for a fair old time by the look of it. Why is it that wrecks and ruins attract the photographer's attention so regularly? (I'm not complaining by the way!) Is it something pretentious, like intimations of mortality, or something more prosaic, like nice colours?
williewhistler (11260) 2014-01-21 6:41
I think it must be the way that the truck has become camouflaged and almost part of it`s surrounding environment that makes it so appealing to me,the greeny golden tones are delightful and I do like the wispy blades of grass growing out of the wheel arch.
Kind regards Les.

très belle image de ce camion jaune en fin de cycle et enlisé dans le sable.Une très belle harmonie de couleurs avec le bleu doux de ce ciel.La rouille apporte une très bonne touche à cette réalisation.

I love desert and rusty cars so this one works very well for me. I think that it is the colours rather than the cars themselves that appeal to me. A beautifully shot image that puts the car in context of the desert that is slowly devouring it. Perfectly processed and not over-saturated, which can be tempting to do with such wonderful colours.
Best wishes, Ann

Very nice shot of this old banger with gorgeous colours matching the surroundings and giving great visual impact. It looks as though it reached the end of its road a long time ago and must sure have a story to tell. The photo nicely captures the desolate environment as it is shown by the natural elements. The light is very strong here, but you controlled it quite well. Well captured.

sono indeciso tra le due versioni, mi piace molto anche quella del ws, però credo che la tua scelta sia quella giusta, questa versione è più equilibrata, spazi decisamente simmetrici e colori che si completano.
InasiaJones (30738) 2014-01-21 15:15
Good ratio of subject/environment in this context, intimately related and adding drama to one another; wreck and desert go hand in hand.
As the colour of the wreck and sand are quite similar, I think it's a good thing that you have strong contrasts and deep black details, allowing the truck to detach itself from the background.
Well spotted and well captured!

Even from this simple scene you make a story, and together with a good photo... I was enjoying!
jcpix (9274) 2014-01-21 18:51
Oh, I love these old rust buckets...and wouldn't you just love to know the real story behind it? So much intrigue with how it ended up here, and why it was never recovered. I only hope this was used as target practice long after it was abandoned, and not while still in service!? No bodies inside, right? :o
So much texture, rustic color and character appeal here...and a good angle taken to show just how far it's sunken into the sands of time. Looks like Mother Earth is trying to claim it as her own. Something tells me it's not biodegradable however. ha
The plain blue sky actually works as a nice backdrop and contrast of soft color. One mans trash is another mans treasure, the photographer has certainly found the beauty in this old relic! ;) Enjoy the day ahead.
I'm having some troubles with my account this evening, it won't allow me to leave a response to your question today on my Paris photo!? It's quite common for cafes to line up a majority of their chairs facing the street, it's all about the atmosphere and being able to watch everything and everyone pass by while you casually enjoy your time there. There's also a premium placed on the cost though, it is generally more expensive to have that added "ambiance" when your streetside.

I love old wrecks car and boats, you have captured a beauty, this one stuck in the sand and decaying away, what a shame. Fantastic colours, well managed light considering the time of day. The grass which has washed through looks like they are spinning out of the wheels.
Great one, Tfs,

I like the colours and tones of this photo. The composition is excellent as well.
Cricri (96959) 2014-01-22 10:17

Ciao e buona serata

Quite an inspired shot, a dramatic picture but a sad story, deserted once a useful veh now sadly forgotten. I love the pp treatment in such rich contrasting colours and the rustic feel of the entire scene. You can make out how the river sands have battered the truck causing it to tilt and stranded. The toning suits it perfectly, indeed an eye grabber so well shot, this is an excellent photojournalism documenting its demise but enjoyable informative image to view. Well done. Have a great day, Congrats.

Good on you girl for going into a genre that is dominated by the boys here on TE, and for doing it so well. I love the strong colours and warm light here. The use of the wide angle lens and the POV have combined to give an illusion (or maybe reflect reality) that the truck is being swallowed up slowly by the omnipresent desert. The textures and contrasts have been beautiful caught. Excellent work, a really arty shot.
Thank you profusely for your kind thoughts on the Mamma Figure. She has really rallied and has gained a lot of strength from hearing such kind and sweet words from you all

you know i'm really going to enjoy this subject!
Tosca really wants to travel to Namibia - and sooner than later - so perhaps i'll get to see this truck myself someday soon :)
its great how the truck has sunken into the sand, as if even if he WANTED to get out he couldn't.
awesome subject, and nice to see its not overexposed in the bright desert-like sun.
fun photo all around
Noel_Byrne (17175) 2014-01-26 7:36
If this could talk, I imagine it would have some tales to tell. I love that you captured this truck before it has totally succumbed to the elements. We can still see its colors, and still picture it as new. no doubt it will not be long before this is no more than rust on the bed of the river. The fact that this dry sandy place is also a river bed is a testament to this ever changing landscape.
There is something a little sad about this little old truck left here to die. Makes for beautiful photography though!
Thanks once again!

good title for this shot:) I love antique vehicles but i have no idea what brand this is, motorcycles are my thing. I guess this truck will be stuck for many more decades but it looks like someone have dismantled the engine, maybe it runs in someone other truck now? Beautiful colors and pov, tfs!
Have a nice evening/

yes, this is the end of the Earth way this army truck... Sad view, but this composition is very picturesque and very attractive. Good register. TFS!

A very good shot of this old abandoned wreck. Yes, the sight of the abandoned truck can really trigger a thought process: how did it got stuck there, what happened. Fine rusty details. Great work:)
