The most photgraphed place in Africa after the pyramids of Egypt is probably this place. Sossusvlei is the main clay pan among the dunes, but Deadvlei nearby is more photogenic. Unfortunately it is difficult to get a good light there, as the gates to the national park open at sunrise and it is quite a distance by road from the gates, plus a shuttle bus from the 2wd parking area, plus 20 min walk to Deadvlei, by which time the sun is too high to get the best photos. The potholes on that "road" are just as memorable and spectacular as the dunes. Some more info:
Sossusvlei is a vegetated clay pan set among towering 'apricot' coloured sand dunes in the southern Namib Desert. The Pan is at the end of the Tsauchab River catchment area, where the Great Sand Sea begins and stretches for 75km to the coast. The flooding of Sossusvlei is a rare and exciting event which occurs only after heavy rains in the nearby Naukluft Mountains cause the usually dry Tsauchab River to flow. The immense sand dunes in the Sossusvlei area, some around 300m in height, are a highlight of many Namibian Safaris and the focal point of many photographs. The light playing on the dunes at various times of the day change their colour from apricot to orange to red, a strong contrast to the white clay pans and blue sky. The neighbouring pan of Deadvlei is also visually stunning. The large camel thorn trees that stand in Deadvlei have long since perished when the encroaching dunes blocked the flooding river, but they still stand as monuments to a less arid past.

Another amazing landscape, Tan, I don't know how you keep doing it! It must be that magic linear polariser that you use all the time ;)
I do like the stark contrast between the three bands of colour in this composition, and that starkness is of course enhanced even more by the dead trees on the clay pan.
Cheers . . . David

What an empty landscape with those dead trees. However it's a very impressive landscape as well, with the nicely shaped mounstains in the back. Well taken!

Your note is realistic. I have visited these area 4 years ago and I confirm your feeling.
The lightning should be better, if we can visit this area more soon or more last. Obviosously this area is closed at the best time. However it is a fantastic area, very well captured
kikvel (4784) 2005-07-23 15:36

Hi Tan, another impressive landscape.
Very well composed, nothing more to say, just looking and dreaming...

impressive picture, well this is an incredible place.
if i understand your note, this is quite frustating for the light, but to me that's very good with an incredible saturation.

An awesome landscape !!! I like here the sharp distinctions and strong contrasts between the colors, the low PoV is good too to accentuate the hills and the rising character of this tree skelettons, great one again !
Have a nice sunday,

This is a strange place indeed. Dark dead treest on white earth are very expressive and their contrast with warm colour of dunes are quite surprising. Very emotional and appealing picture.
poulinp (4530) 2005-07-24 8:01
Beautiful depth, beautiful perspective, and contrasting colors absolutely splendid. An exceptional clearness and sharpness make this photograph perfect.

You have nothing to regret concerning the light when you can get such deep colours!
This place in incredible! It looks burnt out, and one wonders how it was possible that trees even could grow here in the past. The composition is good allowing to see the etxture of the dried mud as well as the overall place.

Hola Capitán or Hi mister Bond: So you are today in Mamibia. Interesting landscape, worthy to visit it. I love the photo although I think not so much white part bellow necesary, but just an opinion.

This place looks like hells waiting room, its so desolate, but really beautiful. I really like the different colours. Mayba I would have cropped a bit off the bottom as there may be too much white.
ChrisJ (116098) 2005-07-25 4:02
I like the warm cold oppostion between the red sand & blue sky & the graphism of the dark dead tree against the dune. Superb sharpness & color. Well done!
bazal (7900) 2005-07-25 4:58
Hi Tan !
These colors are incredibly "living" for such a death landscape. The composition is well balanced, very simple, but also very nice. I think the polarization was absolutely necessary to abtain such a soft light. Thanks very much for sharing !
Michael_Gan (2776) 2005-07-25 7:25
Wow, what a stunning scenery and colours. Even behind my desk I can feel the brightness of the light in this place, enhanced by the lack of shadows on the white soil. The trees just seem to be dropped on this spot from out of the sky. Very beautiful.
sayzey (2358) 2005-07-25 11:46
Good shot Tan, surely you are forgetting Mt kilamanjaro as a most photographed attraction?
This is such a strange photo with the trees in the hard ground. Well captured you have a good eye to getting these photos!

I love the way you have put the three dead trees in the front, followed by the dead forest in the back. Colors are great, you really did marvelous job here.
jbweasle (9393) 2005-07-27 3:10
I love these stark pictures from Namibia. The contrast of the white salt, orange dunes and blue sky never fails to have an impact. You have composed the frame well with the trees breaking up the horizonal lines and even pointing in the right direction. The right one points to the corner the central one to the top of the dune. I like the foreground detail in the salt gained from the low vantage point.

Superbe photo les arbres nous predissent ce qui peut arriver si l'on reste trop longtemps dans la region.
Very nice shot
jpages (1670) 2005-07-27 10:32
Very mysterious landscape. It is impressive to see the dark silhouettes of these trees without life, their efforts to survive the hot weather, the dunes and the the clay zones were not sufficient! The view with the three typical colour zones of Sossusvlei (blue, yellow and white), and its trunks is very well captured. The light was not a problem for you. Really very well done Tan.

Waw ! Une chance de pouvoir voyager !
Quelle différence surprenante de couleurs de sable !
J'apprécie beaucoup cette composition en espérant quand-même que ce ne sera pas la destinée de la jungle Amazonienne.
Waw! A chance to be able to travel!
What a surprising difference in sand colors! I anyway appreciate much this composition by hoping that it will not be the destiny of the Amazonian jungle.
