One from my Sossusvlei archives today and one with a different look to the strong graphic shapes, colours and contrasts that one normally associates with the location.
This was taken during an unusually wet rainy season which lasted far longer than is the norm. The desert takes on a softer more gentle appearance under the cloudy sky. The vegetation is growing with abandon after receiving above average rainfall.

Always a pleasure to see this beautiful landcape like her with sand but also green vegetation, original and well taken.

Wonderful landscape shot. Composition, pov, dof, exposure, and sharpness are great.

Wonderful view of desert landscape. Like the way the checkered sky has created beautiful light and shadow patterns on the ground. It has lend a different texture to the otherwise mundane desert landscape. Good observation and timing. Good shot with natural colours and light. Thanks for sharing.

Fine view of the desert with the shapes outlined beautifully against the sky. Great contrast and lovely natural colours. The vegetation in the foreground adds nice variety. Thanks for sharing and have a nice weekend.

A very pleasant balance of colors between blue sky, red dunes and a bit of greenery
A nice postcard-quality view on this iconic part of namibia
All the best for your WE

Hi Rosemary, very good picture of this beautiful and interesting landscape with dramatic sky, beautifully captured in this beautiful image with good sharpness, depth, light and beautiful color. Very good and interesting job well done, congratulations my friend. Thanks for sharing this beautiful work.
Good afternoon and happy weekend.
Warm greetings from southern Spain.

big sky fan me, I often take shots of the sky in isolation which does sometimes prompt some strange looks. But if you look on my website you can see how I use them in my manipulated images. This one is so full of wonderful tones and when over a landscape like this the contrast is both exhilarating and beautiful. A real atmosphere of tranquillity pervades this fine image.
Have an enjoyable weekend - B.

the landscape is so unusual that it easily makes this picture outstanding. The color and the delicate lines of the hills are just lovely and a bit of greenery in the foreground adds some life to the composition. There was obviously great weather when you took this picture since the sky is great and finishes off the wholeness.

Such bright fresh greens in the middle of desert is a rare and winderful view. Half cloudy sky looks good too and makes contrasty shadows on the dune landscape. Looks great especially on bigger size.
snunney (104837) 2014-03-15 3:52
A classically framed composition that gives due prominence to that lovely sky. Excellent saturated colours and very good sharpness.
Sergiom (86147) 2014-03-15 6:44

In shots like these it seems more than just the sky was painted, Rosemary - as many as you post, I'll still be unable to get over the amazing creamy orange color of this sand. I love it, and I love how it provides contrast to the bursts of green you find, and the blue sky beyond, like a world composed of pastel and day-glo. Really gorgeous, thanks.

A perfect name for this beautiful sight. Painted sky and sculpted sand beneath, the ever shifting shapes of these dunes must make a constant source of fascination. The layered effect of the vegetation, the sand and the amazing sky is really a sight to behold. The sky seems to have that faint purple tinge to it too, very nicely captured.
Happy upcoming St Patricks Day from the Emerald Isle!
All the best

A very beautiful combination of colours here. Both the desert and the sky look like they are painted, with fine "brush-strokes". A very attractive view with an interesting landscape.
corjan3 (2109) 2014-03-15 13:25
I do not BELIEVE this! What a fantastic image! And it has been sitting in your archives all along! Why? Painted sky? Yes, it is beautiful but it is much more than a painted sky. And I am still looking forward to a book on Namibia. I really do. Why not? Rosemary you should really do it. I know there have been a lot of books on Namibia but you can do one that is better than them all. Ok, I will stop nagging but that will not change the merit of what I am saying.

Helli Rosemary ,
One of this marvelous namibian landscapes . With here a really beautiful sky .
Superb colors and contrasts .
PaulVDV (31217) 2014-03-15 14:03
The colour contrast between the cloudy but still predominantly blue sky and the desert is very beautiful.
The limited green belt provides good depth and an attractive composition.
Best regards, Paul

This is a beautiful landscape photo. I'd not say "painted sky" but "painted landscape". Superb landscape arrangement in excellent light. I like the three colors combination. Especially the light brown which is in superb contrast against blue-white sky.
Very well done
Wish you a nice Sunday.

Beautiful desert scape! Looks more like a painting than a photograph. I suppose dune buggy riders have to have a place to ride but I wish some parts of the desert are off limits. Love the undisturb sand dunes. Good lighting and sharp details with wonderful natural colors. Well done, tfs.
Royaldevon (41865) 2014-03-17 2:15
You are right about this being much softer. The sand has the look of a tide washed beach and the lines of the dunes appear much gentler.
With regard to the sky, it looks like a water colour; it has such a variety of co-ordinating tones. Lovely!
My warm regards,
willperrett (11704) 2014-03-17 13:13
You've said it yourself in your notes: clean, graphic shapes and lovely contrasting colours. With the exception of the tyre tracks, I can't see anything man-made in the photograph: not even vapour trails!
By the way, ref. your kind comments on my recent post: Rosemary (my wife) was not a willing model: she just walked down the stairs and I hung back to get the shot without her being aware of what I was up to. She's usually quite reluctant these days, which makes me try to find "local colour" when it's possible...

My memory must be failing me :)
I don't remember you telling me about when is the best time to visit Namibia...i'll have to check out the other photos for your response :)
So how do you get here? how do you spend your time? are you in a jeep? or with a group? so many questions...and how far away from the major city is this place. I'd love to see it in person.
strange to see the vegegtation among all the desert landscape, but its beautiful.
really enjoy these.

Ciao e buona serata

Hello Rosemary. Namib Desert landscape with a few bushes. Beautiful colors, best light, great technical quality.

It looks like a painting, you're right. The beautiful colors, the different tones in the sky and on the sand are very nice.
