Compositionally, it is generally thought that three of something is more balanced and dynamic than two. Here in the desert there were only two trees in this group but I like the way they are sandwiched between the bands of orange sand. Seasonal grasses will soon die back and their seeds will be broadcast and germinate in the next rainy season.

Two very famous naked trees in the dunes
What I like most here is the contrast between the orange sand and the very tender green of the grass. Under a nice pale blue sky
Well done.Have a nice evening

This land is wonderful and always offers amazing images...Colours and the trees are on a great contrast, the green gives a sense of life still...
emilbo (22112) 2012-11-28 10:24

Hello Rosemary ,
Two trees , but what is , in my opinion , more stunning , is the great contrast between the fresh green of the grass and the orange of the sandy dunes .
rychem (16438) 2012-11-28 10:33
Superb, amazing color of the sand and as contrast the green plants, beautiful silhouettes of the trees, well done

I like these beautiful colors of the sand and the grass! Moreover, the composition is quite good, especially thanks to the panoramic crop.

Wahclellaspirit (3945) 2012-11-28 12:38
Beautiful color combinations and lighting, that does overpower the (2) trees where as three or one would have allowed better balance. My favorite places to photograph are alike this scene,
knips (172) 2012-11-28 14:30
thanks a lot for this amazing picture. The colours are fantastic, especially the contrast between the green plants and red sand. Thanks a lot for sharing.
carlo62 (23702) 2012-11-28 14:55
agulberk (3794) 2012-11-28 20:13
Great composition and presentation.
İmage of the dried skeletons of the trees of pale green oasis in the orange color desert is seen very impressive. Thanks for sharing.

GiovanniG (2331) 2012-11-28 22:31
Another of your text book captures. Such perfection in colors and detail with a spot on composition. Sorry I've been out of commission as my camera gear was stolen but I'm back...... And looking forward to making wonderful comments on your captures.

Hello dear Rosemary
Wow, this could easily be in the Australian desert. The landscape is so similar. The photo is absolutely stunning, it's so sharp it looks three-dimensional. I love the panoramic format and the stark, beautifully saturated colours. I didn't realise that three elements were better than two, but your two trees seem to work a treat here.
Thanks for sharing, have a great evening
PS: I met Les and Gladys yesterday, we had so much fun!
dkmurphys (44617) 2012-11-29 3:35
Lovely colors of the desert. Spectacular natural image, well taken!
snunney (76402) 2012-11-29 3:56
The two rather spindly trees bring a touch of graphisn to the composition and help relieve the stark landscape. I like the panoramic format and the saturated colours.
timecapturer (41826) 2012-11-29 4:58
what a wonderful combination of colours and elements. The orange tones and bare trees are just magical and the overall effect so attractive. A beautiful and compelling image of real quality and fascination.
Regards - Brian.

kenytd (45) 2012-11-29 11:24
Hi Rosemary Walden,
I like colors of your photos. Title's lovely, it sounds like "two three".
corjan3 (2003) 2012-11-29 12:34
Compositionally this is marvelous and the colours are just magic. Would have been even without the trees but they add such a beautiful element. A third one is definitely not required here. Well seen and well presented here. Full marks once again. Best wishes.
marabu61 (6491) 2012-11-29 13:43
Ah, another of your wonderful Sossusvlei pictures. The more I see of those, the more I know that I have to visit the place sometimes.
This orange color is simply stunning and in contrast with the greenery in between and the two trees, it makes for a stunning composition.
have a good day
ACL1978 (7323) 2012-11-29 18:02
I think the first shot I saw of yours on here was one very similar to this, Rosemary, with these amazing orange hills and pastel greenery - an amazing combination of stark and alive. The dead trees in frame are great subjects here, fascinating in their shape but so dull in color when compared to their surroundings. Really nice landscape work.
trevormoffiet (1800) 2012-11-29 21:31
The composition and colours are immediately eye-catching. Two works here. Three would be crowded. Great location and great shot.
Sergiom (50600) 2012-11-30 6:03
tyro (17250) 2012-11-30 7:23
Yes, three always seem to be better than just two in terms of composition but I'm not sure why that should be. Of course, if we listen to great orators, they always speak in "threes" - e.g. "Veni, vidi, vici" or "Friends, Romans, Countrymen. Lend me your ears" or Abraham Lincoln's "We can not dedicate — we can not consecrate — we can not hallow — this ground" or Barak Obama's "We must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America". Curious.
But, despite all of that, this is an excellent photograph but probably largely on account of its sheer simplicity. Simplicity of composition - just sky and land with a thin triangle of vegetation in the land and two stark dead trees; simplicity of colour - just red and blue with a splash of pale green; and simplicity of tone - all the one tone save for the dark trees. And there you go again - three "simplicities"!
And, of course, technically perfect as always.

emka (68624) 2012-11-30 12:32
Hi Rosemary, I know these trees :). Here the grass in more green than on my photos. Nice light colours. these trees even without leaves look very attractive.
Thank you for the link to the e-book about online photo-sharing communities. Very interesting.
josepmarin (57267) 2012-12-02 8:41
the contrast of the trees with the colors of the landscape and of the sky is fantastic, you have created a powerful, but subtle composition at the same time, with a strong graphical effect.
A beautiful work.
adores (32694) 2012-12-05 16:57
This desert is always wonderful and you got a good shot here! I like the composition in layers. The two trees seem great there and the colours are very good!- impossible not to like the colour of the sand!
thebest (4258) 2012-12-05 17:29
What amazing landscape the colours are out of this world.
I love the simplicity of this image - look I cannot praise you highly enough it is outstanding work.
I would like to wish you & your family '' A VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS '' with much love & good health for the New Year.

A picture with very nice layers and each layer
has a beautiful bright color and this creates
a nice depth. The trees are a nice break and
the cut up and/or below makes the
landscape/picture extra wide. Composition and
light management are as always excellent.
Friendly regards, happy Christmas and a
