I’ve seen so many festive Christmas images over the past few days here on TE and I would love to have one of my own to add to the theme. Unfortunately, here in Namibia the towns do not run to big explosions of colourful lights and Windhoek has a very modest Christmas display that runs down the main street.
Christmas trees are difficult to come by unless they are of the artificial variety; many years ago fresh trees were brought up from South Africa by lorry but they dropped their needles along the way! We sometimes use a dead branch as our tree, painted white and silver it can look very pretty. In any event, as I have no Christmas shot to share with you, I am posting my Namibian Christmas Tree . It comes with my warm wishes to all of you and whether or not you celebrate Christmas I wish you peace and happiness.
The clumps of straw in the tree are the nests of the Sociable Weaver birds, I think you can see one on a branch

hi rosemary. so sweet this is, christmas tree a-la-namibia :) the red/blue is beautiful, especially the red is simply african. i can't figure out the things on the branches: they look like some furs being dried or maybe the nest of a huge african bird??? you could also go for a dead vlei, they are extremely photogenic and charismatic.

the straw that has been gathered by the Weaver birds is glowing in the very attractive light, easily compensating for the lack of light bulbs.
A lovely composition with nicely saturated colours, just the thing to brighten the dullest of days.
Kindest regards Les.

so, merry Christmas to you and your family.

What an amazing picture.Lovely strong colours, and the shape of the tree is beautiful, even with the birds nests, but I wonder why they are so large when the birds are so small.
I love the mountains in the background.

That is probably the most original Christmas tree I have ever seen but I must admit there is something very special in it. Love the combination of intensive red and blue colors of this composition which made the view so unique and interesting. Beautiful one! Happy Christmas!

I know that you have shown us photographs of very similar trees inhabited by Sociable Weaver Birds before: they have been very interesting but I don't think that any have been quite so striking as this picture which really benefits from the low angled warm sunlight of late afternoon/early evening.
The colours here are wonderfully vibrant and warm and the play of the light, not only on the tree but also on the ground and the clouds, is spectacular. Perfectly presented with spot-on exposure and your usual exquisite details and sharpness.
Have a Wonderful Christmas,

Hi Rosemary, An inexpensive and original tree for Christmas. The red hues mixed perfectly with the blue sky. The bird nests on the tree seem part of the tree itself. Wonderful discovery with this beautiful Christmas tree share with us. Thank very much and Happy Holidays
delpeoples (59188) 2013-12-23 15:28
hehehe trust you to come up with a Christmas Tree so original - and yet very beautiful. I love the fact that little birds have made this tree their home, and we can see their unusual nests. Beautiful red colours and warm light. I also love the pastel tones near the horizon and the excellent depth of field which has detailed so exquisitely the BG mountains.
I wish you and your lovely family a very Merry Christmas and a 2014 that brings love, good health, happiness and lots of travels.

krzychu30 (15512) 2013-12-23 23:49
very original looking Christmas tree. And the birds instead of glass balls makes it even more exotic for us:)
But seriously-really beautiful scene with so delightful and moody light.
Wish You a Merry Christmas!

It is very attractive this Christmas tree in the Namibian style and no needles to hoover up:-) I like the stark colour contrasts and the presence of that delightful little red bird. All the best to you and yours for Christmas and New Year.
trevormoffiet (3112) 2013-12-24 2:19
Beautiful light and colours to enhance the Namibian Christmas tree with its colony of weaver birds a weaving.
Warmest regards and best wishes for Christmas and the new year.

A beautiful post, and as I just said to Nikkita on one of her posts from Buenes Aires, the very meaning of this site! Yes, I see snow and baubles and santa and trees, but Trekearth allows me to see these other fantastic shots of Christmas from around the world and reminds me of how diverse the world is, and how spread out we all are! I am hoping to finish work soon and get one or two christmas captures myself (I got none this year!) to share, but none will be as cool as this!
And as regards the Christmas tree, we have normalfir trees in abundance, but this year have decided on a Japanese Winter Bonsai tree :) It looks strange decked with lights and glittery baubles, but its different. I always love things a little bit different, and thats why I love this shot.
As always, thanks for sharing, thanks for your warm Christmas message and I wish you both a beautiful season.
All the best from a very Stormy Dublin!

I love this and although it would not fit in my lounge it looks so amazing in this context. What an original tribute to the season of goodwill and of course superbly captured and presented by you, as always. Stunning image!
Seasons Greetings to you and yours - Brian.

Hi Rosemary. necessity is the mother of invention by the sound of your note. Anyway, a photo of these very social and hard working birds is just as good, especially as the whole tree catches the sun.Happy Christmas to you whatever the tree you chose and a healthy and prosperous new year. Klaudio.
macjake (70519) 2013-12-24 4:26
sweet note, well done indeed.
nice personal touches on the note about how you decorate your tree :)
Good luck fitting this tree in your house! haha
this surely is one unique looking tree isn't it, well, maybe not in your part of the world though.
and look at the bg mountains, a great way to complete the photo. great post.
Merry Christmas :)
holmertz (56251) 2013-12-24 5:09
This is a Christmas tree better than most, and what a nice change from the usual firs. And indeed, a live sociable weaver sitting on a branch with a light blue background is a perfect Christmas decoration.
Wish you Happy holidays.
abmdsudi (56388) 2013-12-24 5:33
hat a beautiful landscape - lovely composition with diff kind of Christmas tree. It's a wonderful seasonal presentation. Happy and peaceful Christmas to you.
Sergiom (84603) 2013-12-24 5:50

First of all my congratulations! Merry Christmas! And all the best wishes in 2014!
Original Christmas tree! Thanks for so interesting note about Namibia, if you remember the Christmas tree in Arizona is a Saguaro cactus, for example.
Romano46 (18472) 2013-12-24 9:36

beautiful landscape nicely decorated with this lone tree. I like the light and the long shades it created. The nests are quite interesting, it is pity that we cannot see the bird well. I will look it up in internet. Very impressive photo. Have a wonderful Christmas!

Hi Rosemary, Great picture of this wonderful composition. Very well captured in this beautiful image with good sharpness, light and color. Excellent and interesting job well done, congratulations my friend. Thanks for sharing this beautiful work.
Good afternoon and happy rest of the week.
Best wishes from southern Spain.

It is different. Yes, it is different from some other trees depicting Christmas. But it is sweet nevertheless.
Home is always sweet, for the birds also.
Wonderful way to convey the message of Christmas... with outstanding colors and light effects.
Thanks a lot for this unique presentation.
Wishing you a very happy Christmas,
Subhogen (4067) 2013-12-25 20:51
A Christmas tree that houses a family of birds. A Christmas tree with such an amazing backdrop. I do not miss the lights and decorations at all. Superb photo taken in wonderful light. Thanks for sharing.
I am a day late to wish you a Merry Christmas, hope you had a wonderful one. Wish you a very happy new year in advance.

unusual tree. Amazing colors and contrast. Good shot and idea. Superb quality in Large version.
Have a nice day and pleasant end of year.

A fabulous picture of this lonely tree in the otherwise barren landscape. I like the way you have composed with the tree slightly off-centered and all the branches with the blue sky as a contrasting background. Excellent picture of this natural decorated tree:) Thanks.
A happy New Year to you and your family!
adores (46079) 2013-12-30 15:10
You surely found a beautiful and different Christmas tree! And with birds instead of colourful decorations. It's impressive to see such a tree in this wide landscape and the little bird on the branch. Beautiful soft light and colours!
Have a great New Year!

Hello my friend
I red your useful notes and I liked
your explanation about Christmas images
and the phrase that in Namibia the
towns do not run to big explosions
of colorful lights touched my feelings
thanks for sharing with us your inspiration
and many wishes for a happy new year 2014
patpatch (1601) 2014-01-01 8:25
That's a very original Christmas tree, but i like it very much.
No Chritmas decoration here but a splendid red colour, contrasting with this large blue sky.
Very good sharpness and composition.
A nice view and a pleasant effect.
Friendly and best wishes for the new year.
ourania (48864) 2014-01-01 11:55
Hello dear Rosemary,
this tree is so special and fascinating, I like very much its shape, colour and textures as well as the way it stands out in this vast, flat landscape. I was about to use the word barren too but in this landscape there must be elements that are vital for many creatures. The sky looks deliciously bright while the land is mysterious, its colours are stunning. I also like how the long shadows stretch across the valley. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have wonderful year!
emka (102742) 2014-01-02 0:10
Hello Rosemary, I remember writing something under this shot, maybe i had some troubles with submitting. These nests here are not so big, I saw much bigger, but the colours are really gorgeous. Amazing red and blue shot. Spectacular composition. Sesriem, I know the place :).
it must be strange to celebrate Christmas in a hot country. I do not know this feeling as I travel from time to time but for Christmas I am always at home. I saw in Florida the shop with Christmas decorations open all the year round. it was so funny. Outside the hot day, with more than 30 grad, and inside winter scenes and Santas and reindeers.. And there were palms decorated as christmas trees.
Gigidusud (21191) 2014-01-03 13:57
Merci!
Bonne Année 2014!
Angshu (56760) 2014-01-13 2:13
A bit dated perhaps now for me to reciprocate the Christmas greetings...however my wishes do remain
I remember the first time I saw these nests from your picture (different place I must say & not Sesriem) and was amazed. The light adds to my fascination with the fiery red tones and the long shadows which traverse the frame diagonally from the bottom left. Fine work yet again!
