I took this shot after a brief thunderstorm towards day’s end. A sunburst through the storm clouds brought the overcast landscape to life. I liked the contrast and decided to try a B&W conversion.

Black and white enhances the sense of drama. The tree makes a good anchor point as we gaze across this rather desolate landscape. The image has a fine range of tones and very good clarity.

This is a very good black and white shot and I'm surprised no one has commented thus far since it's quality is undeniable. What is this almost universal prejudice towards black n white shots? I don't get it. colour or not this image is clearly well composed, well exposed, has depth, is pin sharp and has a full tonal range. It get's my vote.

Fancy you offering us a monochrome photograph! I wonder if you used Silver FX Pro, or just relied on P'shop, which does a perfectly good job. This certainly works beautifully in b/w, which adds a note of drama, especially as (I think) you've burnt-in the clouds. The tree is of course placed perfectly, and the composition is excellent. More monochrome, please (but be aware it doesn't attract the points!!)

The black and white conversion is a perfect choice, enhancing the mood of the shot, the great contrasts and the sense of isolation that these lonely trees give out so strongly the tree breaks the line between ground and sky beautifully and your handling of the light is perfect. Really beautiful B&w capture.
All the best

perfect composition in b&w.

You don;t show us B&W often, Rosemary, but when you do it's always something spectacular like this - it's great for the tree let alone the rest of the landscape. The light on the branches gives it just the slightest glow and shine, and when backed by the thick gray clouds it stands out with amazing clarity and beauty. The scene stretching out beyond is impressive as well, with the storm retreating and some beams of light barely making themselves visible. The glow above the hill and the sun on the grass provide a nice brightness to go with the dramatic darkness. Very nicely done.

Hi Rosemary - a good effective B&W of the retreating storm.

a beautifully composed shot that works suberbly in B&W. Monochrome brings out the drama and lights in the sky so powerfully as it does the textures on the tree and fg. An artistic and quite wonderful presentation. Love it!
Enjoy the weekend - regards Brian.

Hello stranger !
This is gorgeous, even though as Mike alludes, B&W doesn't really do it for me, in the main.
But your composition, c/w strategically placed tree, and your good fortune with some fabulous brooding clouds is really an eye-catching package.
The bright sunlight on the field really provides a lovely contrast to the sombre clouds, and gives the conservatively minded colour-preferer a clue as to what the real life situation was like. The hint of light catching the tree top is a master stroke !

the B&W mood enhances the dramatic sky, and the bare tree is a good focal point.
Congratulations for this stunning B&W picture, not really appreciated on this site.

Great b&w capture from Namibia.
Very good layot.
As a fan of B&W photography it's just a "deicatessen" for me !
TFS and have a nice weekend

I think the conversion to black and white has worked very well in this partiular shot and it does indeed add to the "mood" and is well in keeping with an "after the storm" image.
Your composition is excellent, the sky still retains some threatening aspects and the contrasts and tones are wonderful. Perfect exposure and, as always, exquisite details and sharpness.

Good Morning Rosemary,
For me, the tree is the star, it stands proud, defiant and commands attention. Once its interest has been satiated, then the whole shot becomes important in relation to it. I do hope that makes sense to you; sometimes its not always easy to define an emotional impression in words!
Have a lovely day,
You were right about the weather! From my window it is bleak! The clouds are blocking my views of the moorland hills, there is a feint covering of snow, the temperature is below zero and it's not very inviting to venture out!

I missed some of your last posts.
I find original that in a so colorfull country as Namibia, you did B&W. And it works.
A strong mood is shared by this shot with a deep cloudy sky and the bright lightning in foreground.

The black and white conversion is a perfect choice. Amazing landscape
