Hohenzollern building in Swakopmund is a Victorian baroque style double-story building, with its high masard roof, was erected during 1905-1906 for Hermann Dietz. Architecturally the building is a relic of the German colonial era.
The building was mostly used as a Swakopmund hotel in its existence known as Hotel Hohenzollern and named after the German Imperial family of the same name. After its hotel days the Hohenzollern became an administrative building before the rooms were rented out to members of the public.
The ornate style of the Hohenzollern building is a neo-baroque, unique in architectural designs in Namibia. It contains renaissance bays, gables, balconies and the ornaments were produced by Croatian builders.
The atlas figure on the top of the front of the building, bears the world on his shoulders, in line with Greek mythology, other female figures pertaining to the same belief can be found elsewhere in the structure as well as ornate angels, lions and masks. The orginal part of the Hohenzollern building was officially proclaimed a national monument on 15th June 1983.

Hello Zbigniew - I missed this Swakop shot, you did well to capture one of my favourite buildings from this angle. Not a car or person to interfere with the lovely architecture. Many tales of wild goings on do the rounds about this place... I hear that at one time it was a brothel! Pity the day was overcast but that's the Namibia coast for you. Warm regards rosemary

Hi,this is an almost unreal image with the grey sky, like something out of the Twilight Zone. One does not normally connect Namibia with the Hohenzollers.Excellent well detailed shot. All the best Wolf.

The tight frame is putting the buildings in evidence. The point of view is showing a double perspective of the architecture of the building. The good luminosity is giving nice tints to the colors. Have a nice day.
