One thing that I always take note of when journeying along the roads in Namibia are farm gates and farm signs. They are often quite distinctive and range from the very grand to the simple and I have considered doing a photographic study on them as they are part of Namibian cultural heritage.
This simple cut out metal sign stood out brightly on a dusty back road in the Erongo Mountains. I loved the design and thought it could be the basis of a story. Where are the small family heading? And why? Provided you are on the right road you will find the entrance to Harald and Deike’s farm without too much trouble.

such a lovely, playful and elegant detail standing out in the characteristic landscape. You've achieved superb definition both on the unique sign and on the familiar landscape, the one provides great reference to the other. I love the bright colours and how the man's step has been adjusted to the distant ridge. Congratulations and thank you! I think that your idea about a photography on this subject is great and I hope you'll realize it!
All the best, have a lovely evening,

Hello Rosemary ,
A beautiful farùm sign that stands out of the perfect blue sky . I wonder what is cultivated in this so arid region .
Royaldevon (34757) 2014-04-24 12:01
This is indeed a lovely sign, depicting the family in a very cultural format. It reminds me so much of a screen printed picture, of an African lady in traditional dress, that I bought on the Internet. I bought it as an inspirational piece for an art lesson but, now, it takes pride of place on my wall.
You can sense the musicality in their step and their close ties. Your low pov sets them nicely against the unobtrusive sky.
What do these people farm?
It seems an unforgiving environment for a farmer.
My warm regards,

A lovely shot. I like your POV which allows the man in front to be almost about to step onto that range of hills behind. It reminds me of travelling in the Sahara and seeing a lovely signpost pointing the direction to "School" in the middle of the dunes which seemed endless all around but reminded me that there was a daily schedule and life bing lived in that hostile and remote environment that included children and education.
I love your idea of making a collection of these signs, good luck
Have a great weekend, regards

Hola Hello Rosemary
Going to work or returning from it
Route signs are quite interesting, this about a farm is true eye catching due to creative, colorful design contrasting with landscape at the back
In Argentina are all white and black

Hi Rosemary. It is an arresting image contrasting strongly against the blue sky. The first thing i examined was the depiction of the black African as I am uncomfortable about the ways the European saw and many still see the black person. The golliwogs, the 'Black Sambo' in cartoons and products like shoe polish, the depiction of blacks in comics and films- all of these perpetuate a negative caricature of a race. We had the same attitude towards the Aboriginal people in Australia. Here the depiction seems innocent enough, but then I am not a black African. Is it still a common sight to see scenes like this with practically naked children? Wonderful light. Best wishes. Klaudio.

i really like how you have managed to keep the people in the signage completely against the blue sky.lovely shot with great observation and thinking.

Une très intéressante photo de cette étonnante signalétique à l'interprétation un peu énigmatique.

I like the simplicity of this shot, and some of the questions it promotes, which you refer to in your note. And, who ARE Harald and Deike, and what are they like, apart from being farmers? I like this aspect of the photo.
The stylised silhouettes reminded me of some of the (no doubt un-PC these days) books I came into contact with in my childhood - 'Epaminondas and his Aunty' or somesuch, and 'Little Black Sambo', even 'Uncle Remus'? Perhaps the cut-outs depicted here are harmless enough; I don't know how they would be viewed by the indigenous people.
Anyway, the subject was well noticed and nicely framed in what is also a landscape picture. Well done.

love this! So beautifully designed and so obviously well cared for. We get a real idea of the setting too. Original and compelling imagery!
Have a good weekend - B.
trade you the torrential rain here today for that clear blue sky! :-}

Très original et très beau comme moyen de mettre en valeur son adresse et son terrain. Je trouve très belles les formes et les couleurs sur fond de ciel parfait.

Hi dear Rosemary
Yes, I know what you mean, farm gates, letterboxes and road signs can be very interesting subjects. This one is particularly attractive and contrasts so well against the desert colours. Excellent definition here, it's like viewing it on high definition TV. Nice work and something very different. Not long until Italy now?

a different shot from Namibia,
indeed very interesting, the chromatic contrast of sign against the bright blue sky is really fabulous,
very well seen and captured,

Ourania used the word elegant, and that is perfect, there's something very elegant indeed about these people on their mystery journey. They do stride with purpose though, and walk on tips of mountains thanks to your clever composition. Beautiful detail among thebnatural barren backdrop. Very cool.

i also had black sambo books :) these figures do bring to mind the comic portrayal of african people in 50s white anglosaxon world. however, i don't find it necessary to be oversensitive for the hidden racism in such depictions. all in all, black sambo made me wonder about and finally love african people before any other written or visual media could do. by the way, the name "harald" recalls "harald bluetooth", therefore, some danish origin.

I love this sign, particularly the colors. And you've done a really nice job with the exposure, with great depth of field and attention to the range of tones from the pure black to pure white on the sign. Thanks.

Hello Rosemary. The photo is beautiful - and it explains itself
The informative text provides good background information. For me, this painted metal plate is high African art. Really very beautiful.
Best rgds, Wolfgang.
