It's quite unexpected to see how modernity introduces itself in traditional lifestyle, as everything around this isolated village is made of wood, mud and animal skin...
The pipe was the last thing I could have imagine being made from modern material... I guess it have been supplied by the plumber of the village...
Hmmm! Nice metallic aftertaste.

un très bon portrait de cette vieille femme Himba
Drôle de pipe en effet trouvable plutôt en rayon plomberie que bureau de tabacs !
Mais peu importe le flacon pourvu qu'on ait l'ivresse !
Bon WE, amicalement

Excellent protrait, every line on his face is in detail, the expression and pose with the pipe gives this an intimate candid feel. The light and colours are lovely.

a great cultural photo for TE!
At first i looked closely at the photo, and i had certain thoughts in my mind....then reading your note, its almost exactly what i was thinking! :)
As for the photo itself, the almost full-frame composition makes me wonder what else is around this person....what is beside, behind, etc....i'm wanting to see :)
for example, are other people smoking too? do they share? is it only one person doing this? ....so many questions...and how did they figure out to use a pipe?
very interesting and curious photo.
See you around

A strong characer with the most unusual pose.
The framing is good, one can feel the hot and strong Namibian sun inside.

Well, necessity is the mother of invention and this lady has obviously found some scrap copper pipe and a brass connector and figured out that it would make a fine tobacco pipe!
And it has added a definite bit of interest to your already lovely photograph. The lighting, colours, exposure and sharpness are all superb but I really love the expression on her face as she concentrates on trying to extract every single milligramme of nicotine out of this contraption!

I don't know what to say about this one. It should take its place in the highlights of TE'2012.
I had never seen a photo (or real situation) where the pipe is literally a pipe, LOL!!!
The situation is even more confusing when i think why there should be a plumber around a village without any tapwater or sewer system.

une grande qualité dans le rendu des couleurs et des textures, une profondeur de champ cette fois réduite, donne beaucoup de relief à l'avant plan, sujet principal.
Un sage qui aurait bien des choses à nous raconter.

I normally wouldn't comment a portrait of a smoker, but this comes with fascinating element of surprise!
And the portrait is of course excellent on this intense sidelight showing all the details of weathered skin.

Hello Andre. Puff Puff. My big compliment for this photo. I laugh when I see the scene. The pipe is a work of art. The photo is a small and fine photographic masterpiece.
The title reminds me of a visit to Romania. Our tour guide wanted to start a washing machine with the so-called Puff Puff (washing powder).
