Photographer's Note

Although some of the men have adopted a more western dress, the women retain their traditional appearance. Naked except for an animal skin skirt or wrap and many adornments, they are richly colored due to the red ochre, fat and aromatic resin combination otjize, smeared onto their skin. Rarely coming into contact with water, it acts as lotion and cleanser and protects their body from the harsh desert environment. Huge cone shells made into necklaces are worn between their breasts, symbolasing their womanhood, and small-animal-skin headdresses, curled pieces of leather, mark their marital status.
