Photographer's Note

I don't usually post wildlife shots but this black faced impala appeals to me for a couple of reasons. The first is a favorite film and story from my childhood -'Bambi'. I was captivated by the stylised deer and although this one if far from being a Disney character, it is pretty with those lovely doe eyes.

The second reason I post this shot is to salute a Namibian conservation success story. The black-faced impala (Aepyceros melampus petersi) isn't found anywhere else in the world, it numbers less than 4 000 in the wild, and almost half its population is found in Etosha. That wasn’t always the case.
In the early 1970s, 200 black-faced impala were moved from the Kunene Region, where they were almost extinct, to Etosha. Forty years later, the population of black faced impala in Etosha is thriving, and at least 23 game farms have established small populations.
