This photo as been taken at the field, and show a very popular social game, indeed a nice way to forget time(s). “Ntchuva” is a game for male adults. Two teams are formed with one or more players.
In December 1991 we went to Mozambique, in an emergency program at Ressano Garcia, a little city, at Ressano Garcia / Komatiport border.
Usually with some about 6.000 habitants, that time with some 20.000, among residents, people in transit to South African mines, civil war refugees, and people from massive repatriation.
The needs in town were related to poor sanitary conditions, no potable water, not enough food, no firewood, no medical supplies and not enough technicians at the hospital.
At the time a mean annual incoming per capita could be 15 US dollars.
Major problems at the hospital were cholera patients, malaria, landmine victims, among the normal pathologies, and no doctor.
In town we have to treat the water, check the results, and provide help for the refugee field.
The civil war ended in October 1992 with the Rome General Peace Accords,
By mid-1995 the more than 1.7 million Mozambican refugees who had sought asylum in neighbouring Malawi, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Zambia, Tanzania, and South Africa as a result of war and drought had returned, as part of the largest repatriation witnessed in sub-Saharan Africa. Additionally, a further estimated four million internally displaced persons returned to their areas of origin.
Now I hope they improve, despite the natural catastrophes they suffer…like the several floods. |
