I'm glad to put Ibo island on TrekEarth map.

Ibo is a small island off northern Mozambique coast, one of the historical slave trade center that the portuguese colonials used along the East African shores.

Ibo's charm relies now on a quaint but severely decayed stone village, quite similar to Ilha de Mozambique on a much more smaller range, but with a more aerial and island feel.

I'll probably come back to it late on but boredom due to limited access is probably the ultimate plague in Ibo... Alcohol problems and AIDS owe much to a "non happening" location.

Just imagine it takes either a private plane (200USD pp. for a 20 minute return flight) or a 10 hours trip to acess Ibo from Pemba, the northern Mozambique capital. Hence tourists are not so frequent on the island and locals think it twice before going to the landside.

I had the chance to stay for two days on the brand new opening of the guesthouse called "cinco portas" located inside an old trade house, an excellent value for money.

The Swiss owner Jorg knows a lot about northern Mozambique and tries to set up local events in this ghost town like traditional performances, for the only 16 gringos that were on the island that day.

Traditional Northern Mozambique muslim dance, as performed by girls, is a strange mix of african move, arabian singing and muslim prudishness.
The girls sitting in a group begin by moving their heads back, forth and round at the sound of a lead singer, soon the move is amplified with the voices, when the chorus starts, they lift up and frantically move their upper body while remaining on their knees. A kind of dance frustration : african groove leashed by muslim behaving rules.
In the end it brings a very unusual and exotic experience to see.

----------------------------------------

A special thanks to Jorg who also knows the way to sack the drunken local policeman off his place, whenever the guy asks me more than paying him a beer.

I will be updating an Ibo gallery in pbase.

Magnifique...

Amazing blur, Luko...very enegetic and somewht mysterious to me. the lighting is really cool and I also like that grain. u've made a very cool abstract painting..!

Hi Luko

It looks almost looks like an abstarct artform..the colour and shapes form a subtle but intersting composition..interesting note too..presume the music will also be a blend of many cultures and good to listin to.

Cheers.

One of the better blurred images I've come across, the subject is clear and strong to the viewer, also conveying a strong sense of warmth through the colour.

Salut, Luko.

Hola, Luko. Very interesting photo. Technically and by the book, everything on this photo is wrong... but artistically it is beautiful, the composition is engaging and the color palette solid, plus the movement add a touch of exotic and mystery. Excellent capture,
Enrique

I am stunned, I feel such a striking resemblence with my last upload (your obviously much better quality), you and I are starting to work as a unity ... be afraid, be very afraid.

I will look at your pbase gallery in few days, or please let me know when you are done uploading, will be happy to enjoy it as a whole, this image is a stunner, it's so unlike you, and a fine example of one of those instances where someone goes beyond their usual forte and achieve greatness.

I haven't read your note yet, will do so shortly, just thought this image is better enjoyed without any influence.

Peter

this shot is awesome! The "yellow/golden coulé" is simply a gem! You can still identify the human forms but at the same time you are thrown into a world of fantasy and dream... There is indeed something magical about this photo! like a flame swinging up in the air, they are dancing. An absolutely fabulous shot!
Bravo Luko!
Eric

hello Luko,

A gorgeous photo, the movement, the colours ... it is all so good !!!! in my fav-theme : one to remember !!!
greetings,inn

Hey, I thought you'd switched to Nikon for a minute there ;o))) Seriously this is a hard one to pull off and you've done a super job in that the movement is irresistible and yet details are sufficiently clear underneath - there is plenty for our eyes to hang on to. ice near monochromatic tonalities too. Very dynamic pic.

ps Let me add something here, Luko, after reading Peter'S customarily interesting remark about people streching beyond heir comfort zones and achieving greatness. I see in this one some of the same dynamism but in more fluid, blurry form that was already in evidence in your Indian women pics "Hold" and "Body ghast", ya know? "Hold" especially - it's a fluid thing, a dynamic...

Beatiful drawings in the picture. I always hope to do the blurry abstruct picture but I have never got it even near to this beautiful image. Lovely..

Bravo

Tom

salut Luko, a great blur this one...
a lot of energy, life, sound, movement....all is in this image..
It is fantastic the perfect silohuette of the face on the left side..
An abstract work, but really simple to read it!
ciao!
Valeria

Hello Luko
It is very unusual, but the mixture of movement, vibrations, yellow and black give this a very refreshing cubist feel,
very interesting,
I guess we should give them televisions to diminish their boredom.
Cheers
Daniel

This is really nice Luko. Hard to put a critique on it, as it is kind of difficult to break things down much. The colors are gorgeous and there is just enough sharpness/detail to let our minds fill in the story. Maybe I wish the highlights weren't quite so white, but it doesn't hurt the shot much at all and overall this is a really effective piece.

This is, by far, my favorite photograph that I've seen from you. I always get the feeling that you are trying to get a feeling of controlled chaos. Somehow that chaos represents reality, yet you want that chaos to fit the rules of good photography...a depth created by subjects in the frame as opposed to aperture. A random, yet controlled placement of all of the actors within the photo. A delibrate capturing of interaction as opposed to those sometimes (possibly most of time) when there is no interaction.
Now that I've gone back an read that, it seems that I'm describing photography...quite obvious comments I suppose. I'll let it stand though because it presents my true train of thought. I'm trying to describe the difference in this shot emotionally (not just visually) with the rest of your photos that I've viewed; not really an easy task.
Here it seems as though you have a good photo because the chaos is embraced...a representation of an emotion or feeling as opposed to a literal document of your sights at that moment in time.
One thing I've suffered from since switching to film is a lack of experimentation. When shooting digital I was more willing to try new and different compositions and other photographic nonsense because it cost nothing and I could see what I was up to right away. I may be a "better" photographer now, but if I experimented more I might be a MUCH better photographer now...
I guess what I'm getting at is, loosen up and feel...I think that is what happened here and I hope that I can follow suit in the future.

Chris.

PS. That left hand profile, a little Hitchcock...cool.

Bonjour,
Iva

This is really a creative work...so the idea behind this is great.
Motion,blur in a psychedelic combo!

I love the movement! It makes the photograph almost abstract!

I have seen dances similar to this in Northern Mauritania, and there they were very religious, of sufi tradition. The were danced to songs praising the prophet...

Hi Luko.

This is a very abstract but amazing experiment.
The blur and the movement are great and also its graphism.

Well done.

Salut Luko,

Merci.

i like a lot this kind of photos, congrats and TFS.

Salut Luko,

Luko Shot or Lucky Shot?

Amicalement - Viviane

Your picture is captured with strong emotion and with great spirit as clearly shown in this picture. You carefully create drama out of it. Man, 4 second is so slow but you handle it with your hand so steady. Colors are nice. It is almost like a painting. The picture is peaked at the top of the line. Well seen. Sothy
