Back to Marrakesh for another photo taken one evening along the wall of the Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakesh. One of the great cities on the edge of the sahara. The name, Marrakesh, is said to derive from Berber origins which translates into "Land of God".

The Koutoubia Mosque, along with the Djemaa el-Fna, could possibly and arguably be the most photogenic little corner of the planet. In about one square mile you have thousand year old architecture, one of the most easily recognizable mosque and minaret's in the world, snake charmers, monkey trainer and performers, street musicians and just a myriad of people and cultures from all over the world. In my opinion one of the great cities in the world that is slowly disappearing and changing every day. Add to this a certain lighting that is somehow different than anywhere else on earth and I can see how the berber's came to name it so.

Thus, the title, "Light of God".

If anyone is interested, here are two other of my photos taken along the same wall:

Hi John - the duality of the shadows cast by an animate and inanimate thing, and how they appear to be reaching out to each other makes for a nice visual. The colorful background palate makes for some eye popping scenery as well. TFS!

great shot. the shadows are different enough to give an impression they're only pretending to "shadow" the woman and the lantern, but in fact are using them as a disguise for their "shadow" affairs :) it gives the photo somewhat mysterious feeling, and a story. also, simple and very appealing composition, beautiful colours and textures.
best,
Kristine

John this is an excellent shot and I would enter it in competition if I were you. Good placement of the subjects. Sometimes the simple shots say it all. Well done.

Pleasing separation of tone between floor & softly textured wall. I like the diagonal here. Regrds. Latiff.

Hi John,
Very long shadow on the wall at evening, the golden sunlight shinning on the wall increase the color to more oren, so special the wall of mosque in oren color, occident one is not in this bright and hot color, interesting composition.
Ally

A very original idea to captured the lamp on the wall and the lady with the nice shadows created. You have composed it very well, John.
Very well cropping and framing too. Thanks

greetings
daniel

Hello, John--
i think you composed and handled the light in this one better than either of the other ones. The diagonal that follows both positive material and shadows from upper left to bottom right is powerful, the mid-stride lady dressed in colors complementing the wall provides a strong main interest, and the bizarre angle that you've found that makes the lamp appear flat but casting a huge shadow is exceptional.
Thanks!
sam

Once again a good shot of this series!

Hi John,
This place is becoming famous on TE! ;DAnd i like the scene a lot... i even think to return to Marrakech to do one also!! ;D
Nice colors there and well timed capture of the woman and shadow... i see the date is anterior to Sebastien's... so you cant be 'accused' of copying, neither him to copy you as you just posted it!!
Well done man!
Friendly regards
Laurent

Hi JOhn,

Great photo. It is a simple, strong composition and the minimal but bright colors really work. The subtle textures of the wall are good too. At first I thought the title was cheesy but then I read your notes. Perfect title mate.

Cheers!

Bob G.

Hello John,
very effective composition with these shadows created! I like the monochromatic view of the picture - this ceramic colour is great. Very strong work.

Bonjour,

Iva

Have a great day.

Hi John,

I have a feeling that you dug yourself into the pavement in that location and stayed there for days to shoot everyone passing by during the magical hour ;-). Marrakesh, need to go there one day...

Thanks for sharing! Dennis

Hi John,
A great shot, composition is superb, shadows and colors are perfect ... congratulation.
ciao
andrea

Excellent minimalistic composition. Brilliant use of the shadows to reemphasize the message. Thanks for stopping by my gallery and critiquing, it is greatly appreciated.

Hi John,

Great composition using the light/shadow effects and warm colors. Good framing and nice textures.

Well done!!!
Leonor

Hello John. One can only praise this beautiful photo. It became a graphic wonderwork from light, shade and color. Fantastically. Best regards, Wolfgang.

yes, another great one of the wall :-)!.. a good stance of your subject this time... i'd crop on the bottom all the way to the wall though... also maybe a bit more contrast....

Deservedly popular photo.
The play of light bringing out the texture of the wall and the shadows is lovely.
Well-planned and executed, and I agree with Phil that it would make a strong contender in the right competition.
Cheers
Brian

Fantastic picture, it seems that this spot is a must for TE photographers! I remember this one most recently. Different attitude, different light but both are extremely effective. Great job!

Hi John,

excellent capture. I like the colors and the texture of the wall. And also the compo with diagonal created by shadows.

Hi John.
Foto incredibilmente bella con colori pastello vivi e ombre che mettono in movimento l'immagine.
Complimenti

Excellent work here John. Perfect time of the day for this very effectful photo. Perfect crop in the very well disposed compo. Top work

Hi John,
I like this one for the warm wall is a superb background to contrast against, also I like the balance between the two elements and the elongated shades, very well composed and taken at the right time of the day.
Have a nice day,
Jean-Yves

I've seen many photos of Marrakech with persons walking near uniform red walls, but this one is specially beautiful with the long shadows and the great street lamp,
Bravo,
Cath.

what more can add to this magical moment. this is an outstanding capture, simple yet genius. well done

Hi John, i like this famous place...!
your image is wonderful!
great composition and shadows!
bravo!
ciao!
Valeria

Olá John, I really like this kind of photos, with a simple composition, a good isolation of the human element, a wonderful background and most of all, a fantastic play with long shadows. The "thinking" is also quite good, but this is the best one, imo. The long shadow of the lamplight stretching to the maximum to reach the woman...Great shot.
Ricardo

hi john again,
a classical beaity: simplicity that works always, a stunning background of the wall and the chasing shadows work really well in this strightforward composition...
no doubt i'll be addicted to your moroccan photos...:-)
best wishes, j.

Hey John,

These two dominant points is well captured, a dimension of distance and dynamics. Very strong visualisation of imagery, the shadows and movement in relation to your notes are exceptional...I like the earthy tones which gives a sense of Marrakesh. Well done!

All the best!

Jom

Excellent image...

Hi John, taken at the right time of the day. A very pleasant picture to look at, games of shadows and red patterns... Very nice with the nice "currently walking posture of the lady", a good timing.
Yan

The one with the man is better because of the direction he's walking. But this is also nice.

Great stuff. Marrakesh is where I plan on beginning my 3 month European journey so quite happy to read your little note about the photography. Great shadows and a nice clear background...a very Morrocan style image.

Hey..another one!

Good one also! I like that in this version some one is walking in the direction of this lantarn..lonely woman. She seems so deeply sunken in thought. Well I can say the same as with the other shot I guess. Nice light, good time of the day with long shadows. Fine contrast and good warm colours! Presentation is also fine with this border.
Another topwork.
