Skin...look under it and many times you find something very different than portrayed. This photo was taken in the Apothecary Souk in Marrakech. Zebra, anaconda, tiger, leopard, cheetah, snow leopard. Most available live also. Many others available too - baby elephants, monkeys, children, yes children, whatever you want they could get. This is the Marrakech not often seen and a bit harder to get to. It's right in the middle of the Medina but a thousand miles from the Marrakech most people know. I was able to get into this section partially because I was by myself. Partially because of my guide. I love adventure and it was an oppurtunity of a lifetime, however sad and disgusting. My photos stopped here though. I may be crazy but not stupid.
It kind of makes me think that maybe we're not doing enough to help. To be able to walk into a place and buy any kind of living thing you want is what I consider a tragedy. Money for life basically. I saw shows on things like this but it is nothing like being there. |

John - an amazing line up beautiful skins (well, beautiful when on the animal, hideous when hanging up and for sale).
Im glad you could capture that - its a real part of Marrakech i guess. Nice subtle range of light throughout the shot.
Cheers,
dave
Good note, I wasn't aware this souq existed, especially so close to Marrakech (the common one). Very sad.
About your photo, the tiger skin is great, as it is the focal point being so bright and colourful. Unfortunately, there seems to be a lack of colour in the rest of the skins. So I think that you should have stepped back a bit to capture more of the skins and surroundings. Though, I understand the difficulty. Cheers for showing.
Hi John
Very nice detail and a colourful scene. Well seen and captrued souvenir.

Hi John,
Sad indeed, even more when we see the condition in which the animals are kept in this kind of market, for much less tham what you said I'm was already impressed in other places I've been. Despite the tragedy, the pictue is very nice, the combination of textures and colors. You find a not too shocking way to show this horrible reality.
Cheers,
Flavia
Hey John,
I hope they were artificial, well why take 'faux' is you can get the real thing. Another 'real' imagery of animal cruelty all for a belt, wallet or purse?
Man skin these animals for money seeing how evil humans can be...an awareness has made us realise this kind of acts. Even us photographers are part of this 'dark' tourism which is growing surprisingly. Though 'some' of this may seem harmless, we capture and share how human nature can be so dark yet it fascinates us, and hopefully learn something at the end.
As for your work John, I like the tight composition of all these skin. Showing the different texture, colour, pattern and animals breed. The colours seems 'alive', very rich in saturation, kinda looks freshly 'peeled'. Great composition and depth too.
Best Regards!
Jom
