This shot was made in the Medina, ie the old town of Marrakech in a place called the "Ben Youssef Medersa". This used to be the place where muslim students came to improve their knowledge of the Coran.
The place by itself is of wonderful Arabo-andalus style after the Civilization which settled in the whole Maghreb and the south part of the Iberic peninsula. Built in the XIV century, it is the biggest "Medersa" of the whole Maghreb.
Here is a focus on a pillar of the Building's patio at man's eye level. Each pillar has wonderful specific symbols which are arabic texts. I believe they are extracts of some Coranic verses.
In fact, the basic pattern of this kind of building is the following :
- the lower part is made of "zelliges" with a geometric pattern,
- the middle part is made of a finely sculpted kind of stucco with vegetal forms,
- the upper part is made of engraved wood.
Technically, I rotated the original picture, saturated the colors a bit and used the unsharp mask so as to enhance the stucco texture.

A beautiful detail, Steven, very well senn. You have chosen a fine angle but most important a time when the angle of the light lets the surface come to life.

Des versets du Coran sur le bâtiment garnis par des arabesques. Caligraphie difficile à lire pour moi. Cela se lit sur le tiers inférieur de droite à gauche. On a envie de toucher ces pierres si proches ...

Beautiful detail and interesting note. Contrast is very good and the depth of the angle comes through well. The part above the writing on the right-hand side looks just the tiniest bit overexposed on my screen.

I think i like the left side of this photo the best because the light falls so nice on the pattern there. It really stands out. The right side is a bit flatter and also a bitover exposed a the top. I like the whole photo very much but i keep going back to the left side there, it really fazinates me for some reason.
