‘Marrakech - The tables are set’
Djemaa el Fna, the main square in the medina of Marrakesh, is famous for the large number of spectacles going on all day.
Perfomers of every kind put up their shows: musicians, dancers, story-tellers, snake charmers, men with chained Barbary apes and water sellers in their colourful costumes fill the square.
When the night falls Djemaa el Fna becomes more crowded and dozens of food-stalls move in.
Then it’s time to enjoy culinary delights as goat heads and hot and tasty snails.
In 2001 UNESCO added the Djemaa el Fna to the list of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The Square does shelter a rich oral and intangible tradition.
The picture is taken from a terrace of one of the many restaurants around the square. The foreground shows the food stalls with steam rising from some of them.
On the background in the middle you can find the Argana Restaurant where a bomb, left in a bag, exploded on April 28, 2011 (15 days after this picture was taken). The bombing killed 17 people while at least 25 others were injured. A sad day for this square and for Marrakech where Moroccans and tourists do meet already for many years.
But people continue visiting Marrakech. Traditional activities keep going on on Djemaa el Fna that remains the most important square of the city, used equally by locals and tourists.

Ciao dear Paul,
incredible the quantity of details in this beautiful view of Marrakech, a blue hour that well describes the life of this square. It 's really sad to think about the images seen on television of the restaurant Argana, which is beautiful in this photo near the tower. Human stupidity has no limits, unfortunately.
Ciao, have a nice evening!

Not the best exposure, but it shows very well what`s going on at this famous square in the evening.
Last november I was there again after exactly ten years and this square and the whole city lost all of it`s fairytal feeling, but it`s still worth a visit.

Very beautiful, historic and nostalgic like a movie set, though, if the satellite dishes. Vivid colors, very affectionate and is a fantastic natural environment and peaceful atmosphere.
Nice composition, excellent presentation and very good capture.

jhm (157878) 2011-06-10 2:22
Goed foto werk, bedankt.
Nard (6972) 2011-06-10 6:46
Good idea to have an hight POV to take this picture. We have a large view of this market, alive, full of people with all these lights everywhere. I like also how the mosque stands out the background and the numerous white satellite dish.

adores (46299) 2011-06-12 15:27
So good to see this photo! The Argana was really an unforgettable place and your pov is just great to show it here - one of the best terraces I've ever seen. Taken at a really good time of the day, when the place is already very busy but still with a beautiful blue sky.
shevchenko (20548) 2011-06-12 23:21
Amazing, crowd is full fill the open air market, lively daily life shot, good color, lighting and exposure, distinct image by night, well done.
josepmarin (58359) 2011-06-13 3:41
an excellent capture of the unique atmosphere of this great square, well known in the whole world. The lights of the buildings and of the square create a nice contrast with the still blue sky, in this good capture from an effective POV.
It is impressive to see that 15 days after your capture, the human madness have flooded with death and with destruction this magnificent place, claiming 17 innocent lives.
A beautiful and interesting work, my friend.
svefay (810) 2011-06-13 3:44
good capture of the open mall...
nice and informative view of the city...
macondo (19780) 2011-06-13 3:53
I like the shots in your gallery! A good variety.
This 'blue hour' photo is well exposed, and has only a few blurry pedestrians despite a hand-held camera and slow shutter. The atmosphere in the square is well captured, and you have a generous expanse of it in front of the impressive architecture. It seems a pity that the walls are covered with what look like satellite dishes, and I see a mobile phone tower, too. I don't fancy the goat's head, I'm afraid, but thanks for your excellent note.
TopGeo (38216) 2011-06-13 12:26
Hello Paul! Wonderful capture amazing place!!!and Details! excellent scenery, nice weather, very nice light and night colours! good perspective and details, beautiful colors and decoration of buildings!, with very nice frame! well work I like the clarity and the sharpness of the scene,Regards

mkamionka (39531) 2011-06-15 2:21
this is probably one of the most interesting themes for the blue hour photography. There is so much light and movement and action. Excellent work, there is so much going on. You have also the tower in the perfect 2:1 ratio location. We can spot plenty of satellite dishes so typical there as well.
Great work it is a pleasure to look at,
Waylim (25436) 2011-06-15 9:45
I see you have just been to Morocco not too long ago. Well when I was here, the restaurant was no longer there, but cover up with green construction fabric. What night scene busting with life, even more livelier than when I was here. Perhaps after the bombing there were less tourists. A wonderful night shot from above. A fantastic place to watch the whole thing play out in front of you. I had a great time here.
Thanks for bring back the memories.

Wow!! Really amazing blue hour shot of this great place. You have taken so many interesting details and colors. Beautiful work. Congrats!
jimkil (1706) 2011-06-20 2:43
what a crazy market scene, well done with the aperture, to try and keep less motion in the people movements, we are too obsessed with slow shutters. Fantastic daily life, maybe just needs a slight ore sharpness overall, but this is Marrakech at its best.
ruisc_pt (11090) 2011-06-24 7:05
A misty ambiance you got here using a slow shutter speed.
Nice framing too.
jemaflor (101285) 2011-06-24 8:40
bebbetto (40) 2011-07-16 3:40
Wonderful shot paul. Very difficult to manage due to the light contrast but you got an attractive image.
InasiaJones (31566) 2011-07-20 14:56
Angshu (56760) 2011-07-21 22:14
What an amazing place this square must be in the blue hour as the activities turns to frenzy with the stall,s the smells, the noises, the aroma...pity all of these cannot be depicted in a picture. Like the lit up tower in the BG which acts as a strong focal point! Good work!
claudeD (40856) 2011-08-05 11:46
