As dusk decends the show begins on the sqare known as the Djemaa el-Fna. It comes to life, usually open and quietish during the day, it now fills with 100's of food stalls.
Smells and smoky, spicy, scented aromas fill the air, and the crowds of people are drawn.
Chefs and waiters try to get you to eat at their stalls, showing menus and shouting specials.
Just the smells and stacks of scrumptious food is enough to entice one.
From snacks, to spiced saucy stews with couscous, to sausages and kebabs, to seafood, all served with a salad, olives and fresh flat bread. And don't forget the snails for a few dirhams per bowl, and how about some sweets, and to drink some freshly sqeezed orange juice..
Alongside the stalls of food you can see snake charmers and story tellers, singers, musicians, dancers and acrobats.
Suffering from something...there are the medicine men with their wares spread out on the ground under gas lamps selling cures and potions for all your sicknesses and ailments.
If you've had your fill of food and need a stroll, you can head into the souqs for some shopping or simply marvelling. Be transported to a world of merchants in small shops selling all sorts.
Spices, soft leathers, slippers, silks and scarves, souvenirs and of course all sizes and styles of carpets.
and to end off your evening how about a sweet mint tea....

I like the gentle light falling on the man as he counts his money, and the darkness around him, a few people barely visible here and there. Excellent sharpness for 1/60. The atmosphere fits well your description in the note. Although I have never been to this place I can imagine the atmosphere from experiences of other strange places coming alive at night.

I really enjoyed this portrait!
With a very good exposure you have created such a wonderful intimate ambiance with that salesman!
Sharpness, vertical format, colors and composition are top notch here as well!
TFS - congratulations!

Ha Ha Wanda
I remember your critic on my post "the snails"
Definitely some kind of "religion" in Morocco, whatever in Fes or like here in Marrakech
Well done in ambient evening light, and yes I was sure before reading that it was on Djemma El F'naa
Have a nice WE

Reading your interesting notes, I could almost feel it's a similar place like we can find in India or Thailand, if only you switch a few spices and mint tea for chai.
A street shot "ŕ la Wanda", documenting daily life situations, something I'm not naturally doing myself but that I appreciate from others, when done with talent and artistic flair.
To do it by night time elevate the challenge, but you came out with excellent results; sharp definition, interesting set-up and presentation of the atmosphere that prevails around the market, enough light all around the scene you have framed to avoid too many "dead spots", so we can see rows of stands, people, signs, and a sense of being there.
Well done miss van den Hogen!

it's always a pleasure to see night photos of Djemaa El-Fna, the warm soft light illuminating the cooks and the sellers creates a special atmosphere and bring me back to my Morocco trip. your 5D was perfect in this low light condition, the sharpness and the almost total absence of visible noise make this photo really enjoyable, liue being there.
have a good SUnday,

Hi Wanda. A pleasure to read your nicely crafted note as it transports us to this busy place. Beautifully lit image which creates as strong impression of a market place. My wife and I will be passing through your own city in October. I wanted to see Cape Town, but the tour itinerary won't permit. Regards. Klaudio.
