inside the dark : the guard's shelter Photo

Photographer’s Note

Maybe a bit too dark, but I did not want to loose the atmosphere : a photo taken at ISO 100 with my small Canon Ixus, when invited into the guard's shelter as it was raining so violently in a splendid and peaceful garden.

First my eyes had to adapt, felt like a blind, could not see one thing. The guard was a rather silent person and so quiet, did not move much and therefore an ideal subject ; took several photos of him with various poses. It was so quiet and silent there, that the purr of his cat sounded like a loud machine, almost the roar of a lion !

He told me that he was 50 years old - younger than me I realised, but appearing so much older IMO and looking like a wise man, a sort of sage in his retreat... He had worked for more than 30 years for the government as a guard, also in the city for various ministeries, and he told me that he was very necessary in this garden as there were many thieves preying on lone women, losing themselves among the dense vegetation - but as it continued to rain when I left him, I did not see a soul around... A memory of perfect harmony !

Beautiful Cath. The shade of light passing in from outside. Well composed. Well investment of ideas. It is wrong to think that misfortunes come only from outside; they originate within one's own mind. Therefore, it is foolish to guard against misfortunes from the external world and leave the inner mind uncontrolled. But the mind of this 'guard' is very much controlled and caring as revealed from the way he is holding the cat. Great work. Regards.

Bonjour Catherine,

Sublime portrait, la lumière est parfaitement gérée et met très bien en valeur cet homme et son chat.
Les couleurs sont également véritablement superbe !
J'aurais par contre bien vu cette photo cadré carré pour supprimer un peu du haut de l'image qui n'importe pas grand chose pour moi.
Bravo pour cette très belle photo,

Un petit coté mystérieux se dégage de cette image et je peux bien voir le regard perçant du gardien, grâce à la lueur saisie sur son visage. Il tient bien serré son chat (qui rugit presque comme un lion) et qui doit être son fidèle compagnon. J'aime bien la texture du mur et le cadrage.

tu as dû frequentée acciduement les musées, car ta photo fait, de suite penser a une toile, merci pour cette complicité entre le chat et son maitre, personnellement je ne trouve pas la photo trop sombre, l'atmosphere est parfaitement rendue.

Grande foto, Catherine!!
il lampo neglio occhi di questo vecchio (??? 50 anni?) ci cattura in mezzo a tanto buio. Per la perfezione della composizione c'è anche un gatto.
Davvero le macchine fotografiche piccole fanno miracoli perchè acciuffano l'istante giusto, quello che potrebbe andare perso con una attrezzatura più complessa.
E poi io credo che quello sguardo è dovuto anche al fatto che il fotografo era una donna! Noi riusciamo spesso ad avvicinarci di più perchè siamo meno aggressive, non credi?

Hello Catherine. One opens the picture and is surprised. Interesting and exemplary, like you composed this photo (up to the ceiling). The view is directed naturally toward the man and the kind, as he holds the cat in his arms. And likewise, as the cat in his arms probably-feels. Both look at you. Je ne peux arrêter ici sans laisser un mot. Mais, je l'avoue, je ne sais si j'arriverai à exprimer tout le bien que je pense de cette photo. J'ai lu très en diagonal les autres commentaires, et je vois que plusieurs ont fait un parallèle avec un tableau. Je suis plutôt d'accord.
Je ne sais si tu lui as demandé de se placer ainsi pour pouvoir bénéficier de cette lumière qui est tout simplement idéale, pour que son visage soit ainsi éclairé, de même que celui de son chat, mais c'est définitivement un cadeau du ciel!!! Vraiment, une photo dont tu as de quoi être fière! Du moins, moi je le serais!
Et tout ça avec un petit IXUS! Sérieusement Catherine, c'est vraiment une belle photo!
Et j'apprécie beaucoup ta note!

Thank you very much for your crittics and your nice pictures.
Today I pick this because this remains me, the pictures from the XVI century, when some part is black and the rest os ajust a soft ligth so delicate to leave you see just the face and the most important things here, I like posicion of this person, the cat is grate too, the peace of cloths and the grain is the plus, turn this pic in a old art picture.

Tu t'en sors incroyablement bien compte tenu de la lumière que tu as. C'est super bien joué et cela t'amène à une compo très forte, avec ces yeux qui brillent presque. Le décentrage est nickel. Grosse, grosse ambiance.

Je rattrape mon retard et cette superbe scène retient tout particulièrement mon attention. C'est presque un modèle du genre...Cadrée plus serrée pour obtenir le meilleur de cette scène et en même temps plus de lumière. Ce sont de très difficiles conditions de prise de vue et là, un bon reflex s'en sortira bien mieux. Je suis cependant surpris de la qualité obtenue avec un compact!

Oh, là ...j'étais passé à côté sans m'y attarder...comme quoi,il faut absolument ouvrir les vignettes quand on soupçonne la qualité et que l'on a déjà son auteur en estime !
celle-ci est magnifique et à mes yeux bien supérieure à celle que j'ai vu ce matin, et pourtant ...elle m'avait vraiment plue. Non celle-ci elle a un plus, oui un plus .Tiens je lis juste la première critique que j'ai sous les yeux, celle de Faubry que j'adore, et bien elle te dit tout ce que j'allais te dire - j'aime vraiment beaucoup et je la mets dans mes favorites - merci -

Classic!!!! There is a defenitive noise on it, but it does not matter. What is matter: the fantastic light, the eyes of the man and the cat.

A beauty of a shot. Masterly control of exposure. Simply love the effect of light as it lits up his face from one side. Reminds me of pictures of the Dutch master Vermeer, who excelled in similar light effects. Something I wish to have in my archives as a shot taken, but I know I can't. Just sublime!
