Photographer’s Note
The roman ruins of Volubilis lie approximately three kilometers to the west of Moulay Idriss (shown in the background), a bright white town which clings to two rocky outcrops, between which rises the Tomb of Idriss I.
Once an important Roman town situated on the westernmost border of the empire, Volubilis features some of the best preserved excavations in northern Africa dating from the first century AD. Pictured is the steps to the grand reception room in what is known as the House of the Columns.
In 1997, Volubilis was listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Moulay Idriss remains a place of pilgrimage for Moroccans.
