Photographer's Note

These spectacular brass handles are on the doors to the Dar el-Makhzen (Fes Royal Palace) in Place des Alaouites, Fes. These highly polished doors are surrounded by amazing zellij (Moroccan mosaic work) in many patterns and colours.

The constellation pattern is seen often on important doorways in Morocco. Being a Muslim country, images of people, plants and animals are often shunned or highly stylized. These doors show repeated patterns of the 5-pointed star (which is prominent on the Moroccan flag) and 8-pointed star.

Itís funny, but I didnít notice the ornate engraved curlicues within the constellation patterns until I returned home and started looking through my photos!
