| In the eighteenth century, more than three hundred of these chimneys spotted the land in Mauritius. They formed part of the colonial history of the island as each of them represents a sugar factory, around which life was organized. From these surroundings also sprouted the creoles, a mixed population of European, African and Indian descent. Today they have been replaced by a few modern and efficient factories but quite a few of these old chimneys still proudly stands to remind us of our unique cultural heritage. |
