[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
In the eighteenth century, more than three hundred of these chimneys spotted the land in Mauritius. They formed part of the colonial history of the island as each of them represents a sugar factory, around which life was organized. From these surroundings also sprouted the creoles, a mixed population of European, African and Indian descent. Today they have been replaced by a few modern and efficient factories but quite a few of these old chimneys still proudly stands to remind us of our unique cultural heritage.
