From a market-place in Mopti, Mali, in 1982.
Mopti is a major trading-place and port at the confluence of the Niger and Bani rivers. Strictly geographically it is situated in the southern part of the country, culturally and demographically I would rather locate it in central Mali, at the frontier between "black" Mali and the mainly Tuareg north. During the recent fighting in the country Mopti was the northernmost major city held by the government.
I have scanned this old photo from a Kodachrome slide. As far as I remember I used a Canon FTb camera. Here is a larger version.

une trčs belle prise de vue,de la vie sur un marché;

Ciao e buona serata

Very nice capture of this street selling stand. I like the colors and the atmosphere around the market. Well taken, have a good night.

Hello Gert. A nice image from your archive. Colourful and descriptive of the market life. The clothes of the women add an interesting element. I wanted to travel to Mali for a while, but I guess I'll wait a bit! Salutations, Claude.

Red peppers and colourful dresses with typical African patterns.
A beautiful and colourful daily life-picture and market scene taken in another region of the world that today has become difficult to visit.
Best regards, Paul

The red chili's in the foreground are an eye catcher. I like the mans relaxed pose and his straight forward look into your lens. What I also like is the colourful dresses of the ladies in the background forming a colourful roe behind the man. Another great daily life from your archives. Mali is a place that I have always dreamed to visit, and maybe one day it will be possible again.

An old picture with maybe today the same images.

Colours and presentation are absolutely nice.
Splendid composition, nice presentation.

Have a nice weekend,
ourania (28576) 2013-11-15 5:09
this is daily life poetry. The assortment of patterns and colours, food spread on the ground, a curious and calm gaze amid this ocean of colors, the gritty textures... It's so interesting to think that this fascinating spectacle feels natural and ordinary for the people in the photo, I love the vendor's attitude. I also love that you got to the vendor's level to capture this scene and to get a straight and not an upward look from him. There's so much to enjoy in this scene besides the fantastic colours -I hope the people of Mopti can still enjoy them. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,

Hi Gert, This is a very colourful picture I have ever seen. It was well captured with great composition and great management of natural lights. Incredible clarity and sharpness. The mountain of red peppers make me feel my tongue is burning. Thank for sharing
macjake (54240) 2013-11-15 15:28
you know what this photo (more specifically the composition) reminds me of? .....
taking photos at a Car Show!!
the most difficult part of the 'car show' photo are all the distracting cars or people walking behind, beside, or infront of you...
same sort of thing here i bet. Seems like you wanted to focus on this gentlemen but there are so many other things in the shot too. On the plus side at least they're interesting subjects as well, all of the attire and patterns in their clothes make it dazzling.
fine photo once more.

namaste Gert, another great daily life shot from your oldies. Great to see those colourful chili papers in FG. Love the man's expression and skin tone. Excellent one indeed. Tfs.
rigoletto (34231) 2013-11-16 4:57
hi gert. splendid daily life reportage with this salesman of red hot chili peppers. it is great to see him surrounded with women in colorful dresses, various interesting bowls and many other elements. this is a true "within the real life" photo, wisely taken from low pov, with a marvellous distribution of warm colors and a dynamic tilt.
abmdsudi (41422) 2013-11-16 8:10
Probably you are a figure of curiosity here. The strong contrast is extremely hard to resist between the cool street vendor against the fabulous vibrant red colour I find a bit hot to handle. This holds a great appeal here full of beautiful local flavours, hive of activities and such fun of a color burst. But they will heat up the coming winter for sure. What a great expression you've captured. Congrats
rychem (21017) 2013-11-16 8:43
Great! Excellent scene and fantastic quality of the photo, vivid colors and sharp details, this photo has a great historical value
annjackman (18585) 2013-11-16 9:37
This is a very good picture of the street market with attention focussed on the large heap of chili peppers. There is a good diagonal flow to the composition. I like the different patterns of the women's clothes in the BG. As always it is good to see these scans of such interesting pictures with carefully composed notes.
Kind Regards, Ann

Hello dear Gert,
Believe me or not, but those old analogue captures has by far a better "taste" than the digital ones ! This one is also a topclass archival entry.
TFS and best regards
kato (11630) 2013-11-16 22:57
You're capturing well this food market by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see red pepper currently stacked much on mat and the seller of a calm expression who is waiting for a visitor to come. And, it's also impressive in traditional/colorful women's clothes in Africa in behind.
UlfE (14641) 2013-11-17 10:11
jacquest (18429) 2013-11-17 11:58
A very good and sharp scan of this market image. The vendor is well placed and there is a good balance with the stock of peppers and the good light enhances the colors.

Hi Gert,a country that is always on my dream for a trip but that it's living a very difficult moment,it's better to stay away now..ehehe...i like a lot your pic,a great daily life moment on this street market, very interesting and very well scannered as usual.Have a nice week and thanks,Luciano
mjw364 (7004) 2013-11-18 4:08
Well the chilli peppers wrote a song called 'blood, sugar, sex, magic' and I guess this was the sales patter of the guy as he tried to entice people into buying the chillies! Very vivid and vibrant red indicative of their heat.
Vasa (16746) 2013-11-18 15:57
I know that the Planet is small for you Gert. You put your feet on all corners of the World, followed with your so worth witness. You realised your serial in the time when the photographes was expensif activity.
Sure I like that scene from Mopti market and I am thankful for your generosity.
Miguel82 (21908) 2013-11-19 7:33
I'm pretty impressed by that picture Gert, so authentic capture from the 80's, now many problems in Mali as we can see in the news, excellent effect of these chillies in the sun, I like the face expression of the vendor, so strict, life is hard too so I can understand
about the mural I don't know exactly but it's linked with the sushi japanese restaurant there
all the best, have a nice evening
gildasjan (41214) 2013-11-20 10:02
Composition bien réalisée et belle complémentarité de couleurs entre le vętement blet de cet homme et les couleurs oranges au premier plan.
nikkitta (14036) 2013-11-20 14:28
Old picture taken with a good form is as good as a new one
About the composition and capture, my preferd palces are markets, where as here you can enjoy watching true real life
In this case the seller of the very orange chili
Like also the background with the colored chothes of customers and sellers
Nice not to see plastic , at this time
krzychu30 (15354) 2013-11-21 10:52
interesting daily-life scene and really apt title:)
Street photography is something I start discovering for myself and the outcome of your work we can see here is outstanding.
Kielia (23083) 2013-11-27 7:32
this is really a colorful scenery. You captured the situation excellently. What I like most is the expression on the seller's face. I wonder what he is thinking. Interesting photo work!
Angshu (55039) 2013-11-28 20:29
A very apt name indeed!
Nice picture of the seller which isa good slice of daily life...not one of your strongest pictures, but still a one which I admire..Would have been good with a slightly wider view with the ladies in the BG as well..
serp2000 (38980) 2013-12-02 10:02
Good idea for a cover of the next album of RHCP.
You know, I like to read your news from the past. Another interesting journalist work from Central Africa.
You are right, Brenda and me took the right point of view in the street... you know that result.
mkamionka (29808) 2013-12-04 6:42
I like that in your gallery we travel not only in space but also in time and we never know what year you will take us to. This is a beautiful composition so full of color! Not only the peppers but also people's clothes contribute to this colorful scene.
Great portrait too.
Very well done!
Glint (6165) 2013-12-04 11:23
I have some catching up to do! This one is a good place to start. My eye was caught by the bright and colourful patterns of the textiles worn by the people in the bg. I also like the way the chilli seller makes eye contact. The contrast of his light blue long shirt with the orange of the peppers attracts my eye too.
mcmtanyel (11639) 2013-12-05 20:03
Another gem from your vaults. You must have preserved your slides very well and the scanning is superb, I can't even tell it was not originally digital. Excellent colors! Now, as for those peppers, were they hot?
fabbs99 (16147) 2013-12-06 11:36
Another gem from your collection.Very well done.TFS.
delpeoples (52871) 2013-12-06 18:11
A stunning photo that, like a good wine, has only got better with age. The quality is impeccable, and yet there is a real timelessness to the photo. I love the look this guy is giving you, and how beautifully you have portrayed him. The colours of the chillies contrast so superbly with his beautiful skin and garb. This is a true daily life shot, sensitively and skillfully delivered.
Thanks for sharing, top marks to you!
eldancer1 (26228) 2013-12-08 7:42
That's a lot of red pepper. Good lighting and nice details. The scan was able to retain most of the colors. Very well done, tfs.
adores (35196) 2013-12-12 14:06
Seems I had missed this one! It's a great market scene - I like a lot the pose of the man facing your camera, the colour of the peppers in foreground and all the objects around him. For a moment, it seems he has ignored everyone around him to focus on your camera. A great background with all those African tissues! A pitty that this country is not so safe now!
