Photographer’s Note

This is Timbuktu (Tombouctou), on of the world's most legendary cities, founded in the 12th century. From the early 14th to the 16th century it was one of the richest cities in Africa, basing its wealth on trans-Saharan trade of gold and salt. It also became an important centre of culture and islamic studies, attracting scholars from all over the muslim world.
This picture shows the Djinguereber mosque, originally built in 1327 AD but rebuilt several times since then.

Hej Gert,
A very good combination of architecture and daily life. A fine composition with the mosque well placed inside the frame. What is he doing inside the bucket?

Memorable shot. The earthy tones and the subject really give an ancient feel. I like the vertical effect of the building running down to the people and donkeys at the bottom of the shot.

Great comp on this, and mali still fascinates especially the north part were you have the Tuaregs, where the men are covered and women not. and actually the only place in Africa where women could decide whit whom they want to married and if the want to divorce

Daily life in such a different culture. The architecture of Mali never fails to amaze. Pity one man is in the shade and another seems to be behind a bucket - but this photo was not taken in the digital age where we get instant feedback and another shot costs nothing.
