[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
a small restaurant in Nkhata Bay on the shore of Malawi Lake, music was cool, the beer was cheap and the food was good although it takes some time to be served. On my last day I ordered my lunch there, and I got it after 1 hour, I almost missed my overnight bus to Blantyre. I asked why does it take so long today to get food... he said that the wind from the lake is very strong and the cook has problems with the fireplace..

Hi, Maciej, I like your shot. I especially like the way you have handled the lighting. You have good POV and nice detail in spite of the low light. Well done! TFS, Shelly

the background part of your photo is simply fantastic with the guy arms stretched, explaining how cool he is... he's the Dude in this place, man...the Dude with no face...

the foreground part is unfortunately not up to the same quality, the sahdow is quite messy, it's hard to define anything in the dark. I would have dreamt of a neat solid black profile instead.

...just for the guy in the background, these two points are yours, Maciek.

Maciek,
Clever work here.
What Luko has sdaid is quite right.

But really intresting work.

Took me a little while to see what the foreground guy was doing but I can now see it. I'll concur with Luko as well on the background, not just the mood light but the guy's impatient arms are stretched out: "come on!" Everything does seem so slow and unconcerned given the dim lighting.

With the foreground I think he should either be a darker silhouette but more clearly defined as already suggested, or perhaps dodge the man so we can actually recognise him just a little easier.

Hello, Maciej--
i feel like i'm just running over what's already been said, but i love the background--the well-handled lighting, the faceless man, the organized chaos of the restaurant, but that foreground semi-silhouette bothers me as well... it just seems confusing and, as Luko said, messy. Maybe taking a slightly higher POV would have helped by pulling the man more against the lit walls than the dark ceiling.
Thanks!
sam

Great picture to me. Reminds me so much of the African mood.

Well, you were lucky man. I can't tell how many time the waiter came back one hour after I ordered to tell : "well, we have no chicken in fact... What else do you want ?...".

Fantastic shot - the natural cropping of the head at the far edge works great as does the shadowy figure on the left. Great ligting and control over everything in the frame.
Super,
Francis

What Luko says goes for me as well, only I seem to be more bothered by the guy in the foreground. Are there two people in the foreground here? I have a feeling this is the case.

witaj Macku; milo widziec Twoje pierwsze zdjecia z Afryki; ciesze sie ogromnie, ze nie tracisz formy; szkoda jedynie ze osobnik na drugim planie ma zaslonieta glowe; fajne swiatlo;
ps.odszedlem z Globtrotera - wydawca okazal sie byc niewyplacalny i przyszlosc pisma jest niejasna; mam nadzieje jednak, ze zrobimy wspolnie jeszcze niejedna rzecz - mam pomysl na wydanie albumu - szczegoly masz na mailu;

i just wanted to echo Luko's comment... the foreground just doesn't keep pace with the background. But I love that his face is blacked out and the toning looks good. I think this is one of your more interesting photos from Africa, though... something that has traces of your style. I know how hard it is there to do the kind of photography that we started off doing... it is a hard place to begin with but then with the added pressure that you give yourself to make good photos makes it all even harder. Stupidly enough, I kind of want to go back!
