As part of my volunteering duties while in Malawi, I had to go to different hospitals inth country. In this regional hosptal in Mzimba I saw another example of the extreme poverty the people here are dealing with. Out of 7 ambulances only 1 was in working order.
In a country with 12 million people, amost 30% of whom have HIV and with 800,000 orphans there ae only 12 registered nurses, 130 nurse aids, and 3 surgical doctors .
To make matters worse 1st world countries recruit the nurses to there countries reducing the number of new
nurses even greater
As to the ambulances. I was told that the were gifts from charities such as church groups in America and Europe. However there are several problems with this. First spare parts are hard to come by. Second mechanics and fuel is expensive. And third the roads are very bad in the extremely rural area.
The problems in this country are many. I hope that in the future we as a people, a people of Earth, not just America, or Europe, or the Middle East, can work together to solve the problems that are really plagueing this world |
