Photographer's Note
A fine place for a simple lunch on the beach - here at the north part of the little island of Nosy Be off the northwest coast of Madagascar.
Although it is only about 120 square miles in area, Nosy Be actually means "big island" as it is the largest island belonging to Madagascar. This beach was almost completely deserted in 2001 but perhaps it is now much busier as Madagascar has become a more popular tourist destination in recent years despite recent political instability.
I'm sorry for the poor quality of this picture. It was shot on 35mm film which was not, I seem to remember, of the best quality and I rather suspect that the film was "cooked" at some point during our stay in Madagascar too.

Hello John,
I was attracted by the thumbnail. At first I thought that it would be a pity that the sky was grainy.
But after reading your note it´s okay.
The composition is just perfect. Also the colors are really fine. You should sell it to the Nosy Be Tourist Association - they could print it on postcards.

Hello John,
I didn't know that you had been to Madagascar. It's one of the places I would like to see, but I fear it's getting increasingly unlikely that I will ever go there.
Anyway, for a "cooked" film this isn't bad at all. I thínk the colours are quite well preserved and that you did a good scanning job. The slight noise doesn't bother me. And above all this looks like a terrific place to spend some time.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hi John, what a perfect place for holidays! Beutiful sandy beach, blue sky, clear water probably war, do we need anything more? This table with tabble clotheses and elegant chairs look a bit surreal. Interesting plant, is it coco palm? I would like to go to Madascar to see the baobabs and lemurs but have no idea how to do it. Warm regards

Hi John
a little piece of warmth in a winter that seems to be going on forever. What an idyllic place to sit and have lunch and your composition here does it full justice. A deserted beach is hard to find nowadays although Scotland is an ideal place to look! Glorious image and a good transfer across into digital.
Regards - Brian.

Hi John,
I think you should make the Madagascar tourist board aware of this shot, and then sit back and wait for the royalties to pur in :) This scene most certainly makes me want to jump on a plane, I would much rather have lunch here than in a business park in West Dublin as will be the case today.
The little elements of the plantlife peeping into the shot is a really nice addition, and that desk chair is just begging for somebody to relax and enjoy the view.
All the best
Noel

Hello John,
there is something about a beach scene at this time of year...
I quite like the various shapes that you have incorporated into the photograph and whilst the quality of the slide may not be perfect, there is a great deal of charm in the simplicity of the shot.
Best wishes Les.

Hi John,
This looks like a part of paradise, with the shadowed table when you wish to eat, and the chair in the sun when you want to rest afterwards. A very beautiful beach and a very pleasant capture. Probably too far away for the hordes of tourists.
Kind regards

Hello John,
The quality is absolutely not bad when I see a lot other pictures on TE, indeed to high temperatures are 35mm film roles not file, the best place is a fridge, but on vacation!!!
A splendid place for a lunch when the wind is quiet.
Excellent taken with nice sharpness and clarity.
Very well done, TFS
Best regards,
John.

Caro Giovanni
Wow this would have been perfect for a Valentines Day theme, you old romantic! What an idyllic scene, one which could easily be used for a travel magazine. Love the colours, yeah there's a little colour noise in the sky, but it's a damn good quality if you ask me considering its age, that it's film and that the film wasn't originally of great quality. Ahh, the only thing missing here is a nice frosty cocktail! Hmm only 15 minutes until midday, am tempted to go make myself one!
Un abbraccio

There's more to quality that just the fineness of the print, as you well know, John, and this picture is a good example. A really entertaining scene, well framed and captured; the elegant tables and setting unusual beachside like this.
Like Gert, I'm fascinated by the new knowledge of your trip to Madagascar - I see looking back that you've posted from there before, but long before I was posting here, it seems. Hopefully there are more shots to come! Madagascar is a fascinating place, and one I'd very much like to visit.
Thanks!

Hello John
I think what I am going to do is to channel some of the underlying sentiments of the previous comments. Obviously a well composed shot - yes issues of grain but that's a small issue because what this image does is to make you feel something. In my case I am dreaming of the day summer arrives and I can get out more with the camera and travel to nice warm places! A timely shot int he midst of this cold and grey miserable UK climate.
