Sunset at the Dunes of Ghadamis

Located in western Libya the history of this oasis town is thought to go back some 5000 years. It owes its origins to the copious fresh water that till recent years kept the oasis full. For two centuries it was a Roman outpost and the Berbers were converted to Christianity until the 7th Century when the Islamic armies came and brought in Islam.

For centuries Ghadames has been an important trading town. Many caravans originated from and ended their journey at Ghadames.

Hi Achim,
Excellent counterlight shot with great perspective. The strong light is very well handled and the sun/shadow play is wonderful.
regards, Gerrit

Bonjour Achim
nicole

Hi Achim,
Lovely texture in the sand ... human elements is a bonus to add some perspective to the scene. Low angle of shot and sun made the formations in the sand more pronounced. Well captured and composed. Well done! tfs
Cheers,
Renier

Hello Achim,

Hello,

Lieben Gruss, Ulf

Hello Achim! Wonderful lightness. Fantastic landscape. Great effect. Good luck!

Hi Achim,
Fascinating scene showing people hiking up the dune. No doubt they are planning to enjoy the sunset. Wide angle works well showint those footprints in the foreground. Shooting toward the sun is tricky for exposure. This is maybe a bit darkish, but sand texture shows clearly anyway.
Kari

Hi Achm
The light is very beautifull on this dune. You have a beautifull sharpness also for the steps on the sand.

Bonsoir,

Hallo Achim!

Not so easy to realize with the sun against you, but the Sahara mood, for sure... And I do enjoy the emptyness, the space, the silence... And that dune seems really beautiful. Thanks for bringing me back to Libya.
Stéphane

A very difficult shot to get the exposure right, Achim, but you have accomplished that well and produced a very impressive image. The composition and the contrast between light and shade is excellent. I don't know whether this is tilted because there are no verticals against which to measure (it might just be the lie of the land) but I would have been tempted to rotate this CCW so that the horizon apppeared horizontal, even if the land is in fact sloping off to the right. Cheers . . . David

hi achim,
you won your challenge of shoting against the sun, You've achieved a nice and interesting result with people walking on the slopes.

best regards
didier

Hi Achim,
impressive dune, well taken with this light to see well the texture of the sand and with these people to give a scale at your view.

Hello Achim,

I found your gallery thanks to Josep and I am so very impressed with your photos but seems mostly with your map of the world which is almost completely yellow:)

I really love climates of deserts, Arabic topics etc. This shot is superb - amazing colours, great quality and excellent view of the dunes.

Congratulations,
Mikeo

Hallo Acim,
sehr gut gemacht!
Dimitris.

Hey Achim,

Huh, what to say, beside impressive scenery .. a very nice photo. Love how you achieved the perfect exposition, without overexposing the BG, or leaving the FG underexposed. Great job with the composition and the perfect perspective, with the wide angle.

See you around.

Hello Achim
Shooting against the sun is never easy, but you've achieved fantastic graphic quality in the picture taken along the length of the dune & the best part are the tiny people we can see in a distance & the waves on the dunes. Excellent shot!
Best Regards
Angshu
