Photographer’s Note

Fourth shot of Lake Bogoria
Marabu's lunch.
I like the way they formed an "X" with the their shadows.

This is a soda lake, circled by several geisers and hot sulfur springs. Flamingos gather here by the thousands, atracting hunter baboons, that raid the flamingos, killing and eating them, and marabus and other necrophagus birds, that finish the baboons left overs. It is amazing to witness the whole feeding chain at work and nowhere else you can experience the violence of preying and survival as you do in Africa.
The colours of this lake and its surroundings are unreal and one is constantly reminded of the origin of life and man. It’s very easy to imagine Lucy (our oldest known humanoid ancester) roaming the lake’s margins.
Unlike other parks in Kenya, Bogoria is of hard acess and seldom visited by tour groups, so you can stay there completely alone. There are no lodging facilities though, and you have to camp. We did that and it was an amazing experience.

What you don’t see in the photo is the noise thousands of flamingos make while eating at the same time: it’s mindblogging!
You can sit for hours just looking at them, staring at the landscape and waiting for the next baboon raid.

Inspite of the huge number of flamingos, it is very hard to take a good shot. Though they fill up your sight, they partially disapear when looked at through a camera. You have to either have very good zoom, or to get really close, which is also not easy, since they back away as you try to approach. You have to move very slowly and be very patient.
