This is my first posting of some shots I took on our recent visit to Kenya. I shall post some more 'traditional' Kenyan images at a later stage.
The last part of our Kenya trip was spent at the southern coastal area of Kenya at the very tip of the commercial Diani Beach area. Galu Beach is quiet and quite undeveloped in comparison to Diani. Just along the beach from our hotel I found some dead trees on the beach, they became a favorite subject of mine. Last Sunday morning I took a stroll to the location. The tide was turning and I was able to paddle past this concrete wall which holds back the sea from a small resort next to ours. I was struck by the light hitting the concrete and revealing the beautiful colours and textures.

Hello Rosemary ,
At firts glance , this is not an appealing subject . But you realize a wonderful picture , using an excellent perspective , to make a well balanced composition in three parts . Each ot them is interesting : the wet pink sand , the superb cloudy sky , and the beautiful old concrete wall , wit outstanding textures .

the colour tones in this picture are wonderful, full of texture and very rich in colour, especially the concrete wall. not often you see a concrete wall with such character. your viewpoint is excellent with the wall leading towards the sea. wonderfullight from the sky coming through the clouds. great atmosphere throughout the picture.
my wife was in kenya last week although not near the coast so she wouldn't have seen this, and she's not a photographer so i didn't see too much her trip either.
have a good weekend,

Despite a few recent posts, I have not really been very busy here since my operation, so am pleased to have have caught up with you again.
I love this - its has loud overtones of pink walls and yellows sheds to me.
Simple, marvellous colours, and the promise of great warmth, which, right now, I could do with !
The breakwater seems organically part of the beach on which it sits, which I suppose in its way it is ! The crepuscular rays, and the broody sky all top it off. Lovely !
I look forward to your ensuing more traditional pictures

this is such an inspired and effective composition. Full of such wonderful textures and contrasting elements. The light is amazing and the detailing mesmerising. I love it!
Enjoy the weekend - Brian.

Finally! I was waiting for your Kenyan pictures. Interesting scenery! Love the colors the brilliant illumination as well as the rays of the sun! The cloud formations are a bonus! Love the details and how the texture of the walls are clearly exposed! Sharp and crisp capture! Can't wait to see more of Kenya! TFS!
P.S.- what camera system do you use and what lens did you use particularly for this image? =)

The light and texture of the wall are very lovely indeed. I also like the dramatic sky and the subtle sunrays coming through the clouds. An interesting POV!

Tout est dans la manière. Faire paraitre aussi bien un mur quelconque dans une photo est remarquable. Tout est bien pensé et la technique est irréprochable.

Interesting point of view and interesting result, the wall looks like a cliff, well composed

Hello Rosemary, a few elements, but combined well and here's a beautiful picture.
You have transformed a simple concrete wall with the surface rough and scratched in a beautiful image.
Excellent aspect ratios, between sky / sea, beach and wall.
Beautiful sky with clouds and the color of the sea, while the warm tones of sand and wall, creating a nice color contrast.
Excellent light, POV, depth.

A lovely picture wih your new wide lens! Not an ounce of vignetting in evidence either but you were on f/22.
Beautiful simplicity in composition and with fabulous light and composition. I have looked at Martin's workshops which are interesting but, on balance, I think I prefer your original picture. Gorgeous colours, a fantastic sky and incredible detail and sharpness.
P.S. On another topic, I have been having a discussion with Brian (brianmcc) about ND Grad filters - I just wondeerd how you were getting on with the Hi-Tech filters you bought after you returned home from Britain? Would you recommend them?

Hello dear Rosemary
So you're back posting! I was so sorry to hear of your virus problems, I'm still experiencing some strange occurrences.
But to your photo. This is so simple, yet beautifully executed. I like the rich saturation and the textures which that has accentuated. The reflections on the sand are luminous and those clouds, wow, have brought you the most beautiful element of all.
Congratulations and I wish you a lovely weekend

you have superbly composed the picture with the wall in diagonal, and this is right that the light is emphasizing the beauty of the place,as the cloudy sky.I love the brilliance of the wet sand, and I love the texture and the colors of the wall.Magnificent!

From the thumbnail this image stood out because the subject matter appeared rather bland. Upon opening the image I was pleasantly surprised. The old wall is full of soft colours and interesting textures and the dramatic sky is also a strong feature. Well done. Cheers, Marlene

A beutiful place and also an excellent composition from you. I like very much the point you choose to compose, the fine light and the atmosphere becomes by the strong dramatic sky!

Morning Rosemary. what an amazing image.. as you say fascinating textures in what appears to be a natural wall.. my first impression would have been to have a look in detail at what was in the"wall". The light on the waves is also beautiful.. I had a good friend who lived in Diana and she used to tell me about her lovely walks and peaceful scenes.. sadly I never got tyo visit her before cancer got her last year... TFS Rich

So that is where you were! I like this image for the unusual and strong composition. The colours of the battered looking concrete are super and blend well with the sand. The cloud formation is rather spectacular. A clever and well taken picture.
Best wishes, Ann

You've made the scene interesting and alluring, even, with the exposure values and the composition/crop. I like the rather subdued lighting, which only emphasises the sun glinting on the water, and the faint rays angling down. The angle of view makes for a good sense of depth, and your note explains the wall, which somehow has acquired an almost natural look from weathering. Quite a brooding sort of atmosphere to this. Nice work and a good note.
Nard (6929) 2012-02-08 3:14
A nice perspective well placed and well captured. The cloudy sky, the textures of the wall and sand, the contrast of colors and the sharpness give a realy beautiful composition. A good idea and a nice shot.

pas de doute, le moment est exceptionnel, les lumières fantastiques, suffisantes et discrètes. Les teintes chaudes, le ciel d'un grand raffinement dans ses nuances.
Le tout parfaitement équilibré et exposé.
