Photographer’s Note
My stay in Guinea-Bissau in 1990 coincided with the yearly carnival. For a few days thousands of people gathered in the city center each afternoon to have fun, dressed in fantasy costumes and playing loud music. Contrary to the more famous carnival in Rio de Janeiro there were no samba schools, no half-naked women dancing in the streets, mainly kids enjoying a break from the rather harsh life of one of the poorest countries on earth.
In a workshop you can see another view from the same place. Both pictures were scanned from Kodachrome slides.

Hej Gert,
New country again! This looks very interesting and I would really have liked to hear this scene, I assume there was some kind of music for all these dancers, probably with rhythm instruments that you can find in Brazil as well!

Intensive, powerful look on the child's eyes. One can feel the atmosphere despite the kids' alertness to the camera. Well done, Gert. Regards,

Hi Gert, I prefer this less known carnival with kids than this from Rio. These kids are fantastic, funny costumes they have and I am sure they had a lot of fun. This central boy looks incredible without front teeth. Beautiful photo

Hej Gert,
I really can't decide which of the two photos I like more. They are both interesting and colourful, and for sure I will never see such a scene in reality, so they are of double interest for me.
I especially like the kids in the "original": they look funny, especially that they know you're taking photos of them, they show off and, perhaps, even start dancing more expressively! And each child has a different facial expression...
Concerning the WS photo, I also like its composition! and the general atmosphere of the carnival can be felt in this more "panoramic" version.
Imho, these two photos seem to be two integral parts of one whole picture/scene which conveys the atmosphere of the local festive occasion.
thank you, and have a nice day!

Salut Gret
I like the festive moode which seems to be oozing out of the entire scene, The two young ones in the centre of the frame seem to have seen you and stopped for a second. Poverty never can come in the way of having a bit of fun and enjoying life, as we can see in this shot.
Thanks for sharing

Hi Gert,
interesting picture from a country, which isn't very popular here. Spontanic, dynamic and so expressive shot. Interesting note. Well done.
Best regards,
Andrzej
