[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a young girl living in front of us that one day I found chilling, in a acute access of malaria.
Malaria or paludismo, among others assignments, is an acute or chronic infectious illness caused by protozoa parasites of the Plasmodium sort, transmitted for the bite of the Anopheles mosquito. The malaria kills 3 million people for year, a only comparable tax to the one of the SIDA/AIDS, and affects 500 million people more than every year. It is main tropical parasatism and one of the most frequent causes of death in children in these countries: (it kills a million of children with less than 5 years to each year). according to OMS, the malaria kill an African child to each 30 seconds, and many children who survive the severe cases suffer serious cerebral damages and have learning difficulties.( Source: Wikipedia )
Guinea-Bissau, poor country in the middle West coast of Africa, had at the time about 45 years for life expectancy,in the interior of the country malnutrition reach 50% of children under 5 years. Infantile mortality rate were also close to 50%.
Malaria and malnutrition are already enough reasons to die in Africa.

Hello, Jose!

Powerful shot! The drama of this young creature and her poor country! TFS.

It makes me angry when I read the newspapers headlines telling SARS and/or avian flu killed a few hundred together. That is the scaring tactics that today’s media like to spread all over the world, particularly through the wealthy countries of Europe and North America. But, when it comes to malaria, nobody mention a single word. It is not their problem!!!
Your photo simply documents the sufferance of a young girl that the world does not want to see. Well done.
Once again, thanks for bringing up this issue.
António

Hello Jose,
your pictures remind us all that there is something terribly wrong with the world we live in. To allow thousands of people die because of almost 100% curable diseases like malaria is simply inhumane. Thanks for posting these photos, because there is a constant need to remind people of how this world really looks like. The goal of TE is to help people learn about the world through photography, and your pictures serve this purpose well.
Best regards!
Michal

Ola Jose,
This popped up and random and I've never seen anyone with malaria. Her discomfport is clearly present with the discvomfort in her eyes, the dry lips and the blankets. I hope you were able to help her. I didn't realize malaria causes brain damage.
SAA, Pat

A very powerful photo - it was today on TE's 1st page, that's how I discovered it... Very hard to look at the so-expressive face of this girl, it is hurting and your note is very good.
Thank you to have posted it !
Best regards,
Cath.
